ByFusion Global is the startup behind ByBlocks, construction blocks made from plastic waste. A 2022 report described the company using steam and compression to form the material, without glue or mortar. But “indestructible” is a headline claim, not a demonstrated performance rating: the available reporting does not establish independent structural, fire-safety, or long-term weathering results.
What are ByBlocks made from?
ByBlocks are made from plastic waste that ByFusion describes as difficult or impossible to recycle through conventional systems. Fast Company reported in January 2022 that the process used steam and compression to form plastic into blocks without adhesive, glue, or mortar. The article said the system could handle many kinds of plastic, including fishing nets, but excluded Styrofoam. What size are the blocks, and how are they used?
Fast Company reported a standard ByBlock size of 16 by 8 by 8 inches, with configurations including interlocking pegs, flat tops for mounting other components, and a combination. Those dimensions and configurations are historical reported product details; current specifications have not been established in the available reporting.
The 2022 article described possible uses such as fences, retaining walls, public terraces, and bus stops. It also reported that ByFusion said the blocks were 10 pounds lighter and more durable than hollow cement blocks, but supplied no underlying test method or independent results for that comparison. It should not be treated as a general performance rating against concrete or masonry.

Does “indestructible” mean the blocks are proven for construction?
No. The word is promotional framing, not evidence that a block cannot fail. The sources reviewed do not establish independent structural testing, load ratings, fire ratings, building-code approvals, long-term weather performance, or current certification. A reported use in a park or other pilot project does not by itself establish code approval or suitability for a particular building application.
Fast Company also noted that plastic is susceptible to sunlight and said outdoor projects would need clear paint or another weather-resistant material. That warning matters for construction decisions: exposure, protection, connection details, and the intended loads require project-specific evaluation. An owner or design team should obtain current manufacturer specifications and applicable test and approval documents before considering the blocks for a permitted or load-bearing application.
What did the Boise pilot demonstrate?
Fast Company reported that a Boise-area pilot collected about 30 tons of plastic grocery bags, bubble wrap, and fast-food containers, which were made into blocks; some blocks were used in a local park. The article said 20% of residents participated in the separation effort. What scale and company targets were reported?
Fast Company reported in 2022 that ByFusion cited annual capacity of 450 tons at its Los Angeles production unit, had recycled 103 tons to date, and aimed to recycle 100 million tons by 2030. The first two numbers were company-reported historical figures; the 100-million-ton figure was a goal, not an achieved result. They do not establish current operating status, capacity, or cumulative output. What remains unknown before specifying ByBlocks?
The available reporting does not establish current block or machine availability, current prices, code approvals, structural ratings, independent fire-test results, long-term weathering performance, or environmental life-cycle impacts. Nor does it provide a like-for-like performance comparison with conventional masonry. These gaps mean a promising waste-reuse concept should not be confused with a fully documented building product for a specific project.
