A break-in at the Leschenault Community Nursery’s workshop left staff and volunteers without equipment used to keep the site maintained. In a report published September 17, 2024, PerthNow’s Craig Duncan said the theft happened at about 11:20 p.m. on Friday, September 6, and the missing tools were valued at around $4,000.
What was stolen from the nursery?
PerthNow reported that a chainsaw, compressor, drill and several batteries were taken. The reported value of around $4,000 was an estimate for the missing equipment, not an independently verified inventory valuation. The thief reportedly used a work trolley belonging to nursery handyman James Bawden to move the equipment to the fence.
The report also said Bawden had kept his own angle grinder in the shed, and that it was among the items lost.
How did the intruder get into the workshop?
Nursery manager Jacquie Rusha told PerthNow that the intruder cut through a barbed-wire fence, climbed over it, turned away the only two cameras facing the workshop, broke the lock and took the tools. Rusha thought the person may have known the nursery’s layout; that was her assessment, not a confirmed investigative finding in the report.

How did the theft affect staff and volunteers?
Maintenance work was disrupted
Bawden said the loss affected the routine work he did around the nursery: “All the tools I used daily are just gone.” Without them, he said, he could not carry out jobs such as fixing a loose fence or shed panels and doing general maintenance. “If I can’t fix stuff, then I’m not being useful here. I can’t fix the loose fence or some of the loose panels on the shed or do the general maintenance I normally do around here.”
The loss felt personal
Rusha said the incident had consumed time that the small staff and volunteer team did not have to spare. “We’re a community organisation, here for the community, and to be targeted in that kind of way, it’s disappointing,” she told PerthNow. She also described the emotional effect: “On the emotional side of it, it feels like a violation when we’re here to help the community and support people in every way we possibly can.”

PerthNow described the nonprofit as supplying plants to groups across the region and caring for more than 400 species of native plants. The theft therefore affected more than a tool shed: it interrupted practical maintenance at a community organization with a wider regional role.

At the time PerthNow published its September 2024 report, Rusha said the nursery welcomed information for Bunbury Police and donations of unused spare power tools. That was a contemporaneous appeal, not confirmation that the nursery still needs or accepts equipment today.

The report did not establish whether police recovered the tools, whether anyone was charged, or whether the nursery later replaced the equipment. It also does not establish the nursery’s current donation needs.
