Snowdrops and crocuses can flower while winter still lingers; daffodils, tulips and other hardy bulbs carry the display into spring. Because the original six flowers behind this title aren’t identified, this is a proposed selection—not a confirmed lineup. Bloom dates vary with weather, local climate and site conditions, so use the flowers below as options rather than a universal calendar.
What flowers bloom first in spring?
Snowdrops and crocuses are among the earliest choices. University of Minnesota Extension notes that “Crocus is one of several hardy bulbs that emerge early in spring, sometimes while there is still snow on the ground.” The timing depends on local conditions: bulbs may emerge first where soil warms early, and a warm winter can affect when plants appear. Neither flower has a single reliable bloom date for every region.
Six flowers to consider for an early-spring display
This proposed list moves from very early flowers to bulbs that extend the season. Exact bloom order varies by climate, weather, planting site and variety; the sources do not establish a universal ranking.
1. Snowdrops
Snowdrops are a cold-tolerant choice for the tail end of winter. University of Minnesota Extension reported a snowdrop flowering in the Twin Cities on February 26, 2024—a local example, not a date to expect everywhere. Plant snowdrop bulbs in fall according to the package directions.

2. Crocuses
Crocuses can emerge very early, sometimes before snow has disappeared. Their low-growing flowers bring color close to the ground, making them a natural choice for the front of a bed or a lawn area suited to bulbs. Choose varieties for your climate and follow the supplier’s planting directions.
3. Daffodils
Daffodils add bright, trumpet-shaped flowers as spring advances. They are hardy spring-flowering bulbs in suitable climates and are generally planted in fall. Bloom timing and hardiness vary by variety and location, so check the bulb label before buying.

Tulips offer a wide range of colors and flower forms, with varieties that bloom at different points in spring. Use the package’s depth and spacing instructions rather than assuming all tulips should be planted alike.
5. Other hardy spring bulbs
There are other hardy spring-flowering bulbs beyond the familiar snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and tulips. Which ones suit a garden depends on local climate and the bulb’s growing instructions. Check the label for expected conditions and planting guidance before choosing.

6. A second bulb variety for a longer display
For a sixth place in the proposed selection, choose another locally suitable spring-flowering bulb—or a different variety of one of the flowers above—to broaden the colors and forms in the planting. Selecting bulbs with different expected bloom periods may help extend the display, but actual timing depends on weather and site conditions.
How to choose bulbs for your climate
- Check local suitability. Hardy spring bulbs need a cold period and are generally planted in fall, but suitability depends on climate and bulb type. Use the package instructions for the specific bulbs you buy.
- Plan for a sequence, not fixed dates. Compare expected bloom periods and flower forms on bulb labels, while allowing for local weather and how quickly the planting site warms.
- Follow the label for planting. Depth and spacing are not one-size-fits-all. Use the directions supplied for each bulb.
- Adapt regional calendars. In Minnesota, University of Minnesota Extension advises buying hardy bulbs around August to September and planting them promptly. That regional guidance is not a universal shopping or planting window.
When to plant spring-flowering bulbs
Hardy spring-flowering bulbs generally need a cold period, which is why they are usually planted in fall. The right timing depends on where you garden and what you are planting. Minnesota’s August-to-September buying advice is specific to that region; elsewhere, follow local guidance and the bulb package rather than applying the Minnesota calendar unchanged.
