Before starting, consider whether you have access to a lathe and the safety equipment and experience needed for the turning and slot-cutting operations.
What the plan covers
WOOD Store says the plan was featured in WOOD Issue 246, May 2017, and lists an update date of January 8, 2024. It describes a project for a turned yarn bowl that holds one skein. The available plan description does not establish additional details such as the specified wood species, required tools, or whether the plan includes a particular slot-cutting jig, so check the plan itself for those requirements before gathering materials.
Design details that affect how the bowl works
In their 2014 American Association of Woodturners feature, Jim Meizelis and Terry Quiram describe the dimensions they chose for a stable yarn bowl. These are the authors’ design choices, not universal requirements for every bowl or a specification confirmed for the WOOD Store plan.
| Feature | Dimensions described by Meizelis and Quiram | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Inside diameter | 6–8 inches | Provides space for a skein of yarn. |
| Height | 4–6 inches | Contributes to the bowl’s form and stability. |
| Wall and bottom thickness | 1/2–3/4 inch | Part of the authors’ chosen proportions for the bowl. |
Why the yarn exit is J-shaped
A yarn bowl needs an opening that guides the yarn while still letting the ball or skein be removed. Meizelis and Quiram explain that a J-shaped slot lets the yarn ball come out without pulling the yarn end back through a closed hole—a practical advantage when the yarn is attached to unfinished knitting.
#1 Best Overall
- Large Capacity Yarn Bowl: The size of the yarn bowl is 11.3x5.9x4.7inch, oval design, can hold 7oz skein or multiple smaller ball of yarn, provide ample storage space for your yarn.
- Double Curling Slot Design: Each side of the yarn bowl has a curling slot that grabs the yarn as you weave, allowing multiple yarns to flow steadily in the swirl while preventing tangles.
- 9-Piece Crochet Hook Set: With 9 sizes of high-quality metal crochet, unlike wood crochet, metal crochet is smooth and will not stick
- Acacia Wood yarn bowl: Yarn bowl using high quality acacia wood material, no burrs, feel smooth, will not pinch or cut the yarn.
- Small Object Organizer: When you're not knitting, you can use your yarn bowl to hold small items, The yarn bowls for crocheting have the right size and weight, are easy to carry around, so you can knit anytime.
Slot-cutting approaches described by the feature authors
Meizelis and Quiram report trying four ways to cut the opening. Their account is experience with their own setups, not a controlled comparison or a general safety guarantee.
| Approach | Where and what it involves | Authors’ reported assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Off-lathe router jig | Uses a jig to guide the cut away from the lathe. | The authors’ preferred approach for repeated, consistent results. |
| Lathe-mounted drilling setup | Uses a hole saw with a drilling accessory at the lathe. | The authors report acceptable results with their setup. |
| Coping saw | Manual cutting away from the lathe. | The authors describe their results as inconsistent. |
| Spiral cutter in a rotary tool | Freehand or guided cutting away from the lathe. | The authors describe their results as inconsistent or unsafe. |
| Hole saw in a drill press | Drilling-press setup away from the lathe. | The authors describe their results as inconsistent or unsafe. |
For their lathe-mounted example, the authors describe using a 2 3/4-inch (70 mm) hole saw and a 7/16-inch (11 mm) hole at the slot end. Those figures describe their method; they are not a general instruction to reproduce it. The appropriate setup depends on the machine, accessory, workholding, and operator’s skill. If you are unfamiliar with a method, get suitable instruction and follow the machine and accessory manufacturers’ guidance.

Lathe access and safety equipment
Woodturning uses a lathe and hand-held tools to shape work that is symmetrical around an axis, according to the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). A lathe is therefore central to this turning project if you do not already have access to one. AAW’s Lathe Safety Basics states: “Wear a full face shield any time the lathe is on.”
- Tie back long hair. Do not wear gloves, loose clothing, jewelry, or dangling items around a running lathe.
- Firmly mount the work, then check by hand that it clears the tool rest and machine before switching on.
- Start the lathe slowly and step out of the red zone when switching it on.
- Never leave a running lathe unattended, and wait for it to stop fully.
- Follow the lathe’s owner/operator manual and get suitable instruction before attempting unfamiliar operations.
These precautions are AAW guidance, not a substitute for the instructions supplied with your lathe or training appropriate to the work. The project information does not identify a tested lathe or face-shield model.

Check the plan against your setup
Before beginning, compare the plan’s instructions with the equipment and skill you will actually use. In particular, confirm the turning requirements and the method specified for cutting the J-shaped slot. The feature authors’ preferred jig may not be the same setup required by the WOOD Store plan.
