Its builder, Philip Marciniak of Saanich, British Columbia, described a setup made from cut plastic barrel sections and scrap lumber, and warned that deeper snow and other e-bikes could present different challenges.
What the bicycle snowplow is—and what it is not
The featured Hackaday build is a long-wheelbase electric-assisted cargo bicycle adapted to push snow with a front-mounted scoop. The front cargo area can be weighted to help the scoop contact the ground. This is a reported DIY transportation project, not an off-the-shelf bicycle snowplow kit or an independently evaluated design.
Local reporting identifies the builder as Philip Marciniak. He told iNFOnews that he first made a flat-front plow, then shaped a scoop from a plastic rain barrel and fitted it to a cargo e-bike with scrap lumber. He said he hoped other people would build and improve the design rather than buy a plow from him.
How the DIY e-bike plow is assembled
Documented materials and mechanism
- Scoop: Sections cut from a plastic 55-gallon drum form the two scooping sections in the Hackaday feature. Marciniak described shaping a scoop from a 200-litre plastic rain barrel; these are descriptions of his build, not a universal parts specification.
- Frame: A wooden 2×4 frame and scrap lumber attach the scoop to the cargo bicycle.
- Lift: A ratchet-strap mechanism raises and lowers the scoop.
- Contact with the path: Hackaday reports that the flexible plastic can skip over bumps rather than behaving like a rigid blade. The front cargo area can be weighted to encourage ground contact.
The reports do not establish dimensions, a tested attachment standard, a compatible-bike list, or an engineering validation. A copy would need to be adapted to its bicycle, route and operator; the accounts do not show that one set of measurements will work across cargo bikes.
#1 Best Overall
- Universal Fit: This snow plow kit features an upgraded multi-hole mounting plate with 3 installation options. It fits most ATV and UTV models, providing greater installation flexibility and compatibility
- Fully Adjustable Design: Our snow plow attachment provides 5 left-to-right angle positions up to ±24.88° and 3 height settings. It adapts easily to steep slopes, deep snow, and rough terrain for demanding working conditions
- Reinforced Structure: Both the main blade panel and mounting plate of the snow plow are reinforced for improved overall durability. The push tube wall thickness is increased to 4 mm, providing greater strength and resistance to bending
- Quick Installation: This snow plow blade uses a simplified component structure for quick attachment to or removal from the mounting bracket. It saves installation time and can be detached easily for space-saving storage when not in use
- Versatile Use: Our ATV and UTV snow plow kit is suitable for residential driveways, farm roads, parking lots, and rural paths. It moves more snow in each pass, improving overall clearing efficiency
How much snow can a bicycle plow move?
Marciniak estimated that his e-bike could handle up to six inches of fresh, light snow, while saying deeper snow would be difficult. He told iNFOnews that two or three inches felt manageable and advised clearing as snow falls. Those figures are his estimates and experience with his own setup, not controlled test results or performance specifications for bicycle plows generally.
Snow condition matters as much as depth: the reported capability concerns fresh, light snow. The available accounts do not establish performance in wet, compacted or icy snow, nor do they report clearing speed, area per charge, or comparative results against a shovel or powered machine.
Rank #2
- Universal Snow Pusher: This universal snow plow kit fits snow blowers from 22 to 32 inches wide. It helps push away snow, slush, and broken ice with ease
- Easy Installation: Our snow plow attachment comes with a simplified set of components for convenient installation and removal. It folds down for compact, space-saving storage when not in use
- Efficient Snow Clearing: The snow plow helps the snow blower handle difficult conditions such as melting snow, slush, ice chunks, and gravel. Its front-mounted blade also shields the snow blower's shear pins, improving winter clearing efficiency
- Durable Construction: This snow plow blade is made of high-strength steel with excellent impact resistance. It withstands repeated use in freezing temperatures and harsh snow conditions while resisting deformation and rust
- Versatile Use: Our universal snow plow is suitable for driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. It serves as a practical snow blower blade attachment for more efficient and thorough snow removal
Other bicycle snowplow concepts are not performance comparisons
There are other hobby and concept examples, but they do not provide controlled evidence for ranking designs:
- A 2019 ViralHog video description recounts a pedal-powered prototype in New Milford, Connecticut. Its builder said it could clear a flat driveway and sidewalk and described it as a workout.
- A 2013 Korean patent application describes a tricycle with a front snow-removal plate raised and lowered by cable. A patent describes an invention; it does not demonstrate that it was sold or tested in real snow.
When assessing a bicycle-powered snowplow idea, compare the platform (pedal tricycle, standard bicycle or electric cargo bike), how the implement mounts, the snow and surface it is intended for, and the traction and control required. The cited examples do not establish which approach clears more snow or is safer.
Rank #3
- Universal Compatibility , Designed with a universal mount plate and push frame to fit most ATV and UTV models for snow removal.
- 60-Inch Steel Blade – Wide, heavy-duty blade built from durable steel to clear driveways, paths, and open areas efficiently.
- 5-Position Angle Adjustment – Blade can be set straight or angled left or right to adapt to different plowing needs.
- Adjustable Ground Clearance – Blade height can be adjusted 1–3 cm above the ground to protect pavement, gravel, or uneven surfaces.
- Durable Construction – Reinforced steel with a powder-coated finish provides strength and resistance to rust and weather.
Traction, control and winter maintenance
Marciniak said he lowered tire pressure to 15–20 psi for traction and that ice tires help. These are his setup choices, not a universal pressure recommendation: a suitable pressure depends on the bicycle and tire, and the reports do not establish that the setup guarantees control. He also cautioned that he did not know how his plow would work on other e-bikes and suggested protective gear, including a full-face helmet, for people copying the project.
The City of Edmonton’s winter-cycling guidance recommends considering studded or knobby tires for winter traction, and advises cleaning a bicycle and lubricating its chain, brakes and cables. That is general winter-cycling advice, not a test of tires on a plow-equipped bicycle. Visibility, braking and the ability to steer remain practical concerns when adding a snow-pushing load to a bike.
Rank #4
- 50-inch universal snowplow. Winch NOT included
- Durable steel construction for reliability & longevity.
- Easy, universal attachment on most ATVs.
- Adjustable angling up to 5 different positions for precise control.
- Replaceable gravel skids, steel wear bar, and hardware available separately.
A personal plow does not replace bikeway maintenance
For public routes, keeping a bikeway passable is also a municipal maintenance issue. The National Association of City Transportation Officials recommends including bikeways in annual winter maintenance plans. Its guidance says that when more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) of snow is expected, cities should plan to clear during and after the storm, with salting and sanding before or alongside clearing. It also emphasizes equipment access, turning space and where displaced snow will go so that clearing does not create icing problems.
That municipal guidance concerns city operations, not a homemade bicycle attachment. A personal bike plow may be relevant to a small path or private driveway under suitable conditions; it is not evidence that a city route will be cleared or that a DIY setup can take the place of a municipal service.
