Its original rooms were built from shipping containers, but the design later evolved to include bespoke expandable rooms carried on trailers. Today, the company promotes a bookable hotel at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London, so “shipping-container hotel” describes Snoozebox’s origins—not necessarily every version of its accommodation.
What exactly is Snoozebox?
Snoozebox is a modular accommodation concept: rather than fitting rooms into a conventional permanent hotel building, it uses self-contained units that can be brought to a site and arranged as temporary lodging. The company says its first hotel opened at Silverstone for the 2011 British Grand Prix. Snoozebox’s company history describes the concept as built for event attendees and says the hotel could be built, dismantled, transported and re-erected within 24 hours. That is a historical company claim, not an independently verified deployment time or a present-day guarantee.
The original units were shipping-container rooms, according to the Society of British and International Interior Design’s project account. Over time, the design changed: later Snoozebox rooms were purpose-built mobile units that folded for transport. The name therefore refers to an evolving portable-hotel concept, not one fixed container design.
How did the room design evolve?
Original shipping-container rooms
The first version used rooms built in shipping containers. This approach connected the accommodation to the logistics of moving modular units to an event site, but the early description should not be applied automatically to later Snoozebox designs.

Expandable rooms carried on trailers
In a later design project, Tangerine describes a mobile room measuring 3.6m x 2m x 2m when compacted for transport. Its design included seven bed configurations and was intended to accommodate up to four people. Tangerine’s case study explains the design; it does not establish that every configuration was available at every installation.
The SBID account describes bespoke trailers carrying six expandable rooms each. It also says the trailer arrangement could carry 50% more rooms per lorry than the earlier approach. Those figures belong to that 2015 design-award case study, not a general measure of current transport capacity.

Is Snoozebox still a hotel guests can book?
Yes. Snoozebox’s current site promotes Snoozebox Olympic Park, at Pudding Mill Lane, London E15 2NQ, beside Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and next to Pudding Mill Lane DLR. The hotel is listed as adults-only, with direct booking through the official Snoozebox website.
What a room includes
The site describes rooms with a double bed and single bunk, an en-suite shower and toilet, towels and toiletries, a TV, safe and air conditioning. Hairdryers and irons are available by request. Tea and coffee are offered in the social hub. These are the amenities stated on the hotel’s website and may change, so check the live listing when booking.

Check-in, breakfast and checkout

Early or late checkout may be available for a fee, subject to availability.
Where else has the portable-hotel concept been used?
Snoozebox’s company history discusses applications beyond event stays, including work sites and other sectors. The Portable Living Group also describes Snoozebox as a turnkey hotel concept deployable at different locations and durations, and lists areas including events, hotels, workforce accommodation, housing, healthcare and adventure. These are company and group descriptions of potential applications; they do not confirm that each service is currently operating or available in every location.

The Olympic Park property also hosts private events, with the company listing capacity for up to 500 guests alongside event spaces and event listings. That is a secondary use of the current venue; it is distinct from the original portable-hotel offer to event attendees.

The documented designs show how Snoozebox moved from container-based rooms to expandable mobile rooms, and the current site establishes that the brand promotes a bookable East London hotel. They do not provide an independently audited comparison of Snoozebox with conventional hotels for cost, environmental impact or deployment performance. Snoozebox says on its About page that it was voted in the top 10% of hotels worldwide in 2023 and 2025, but the page does not explain the methodology behind that statement.
