Before attempting any live capture, consider the animal’s welfare, how often you can check the trap, and what will happen after capture. A trap that does not kill immediately is not automatically humane.
What the soda-bottle project does—and does not—show
Chris Notap’s video, “How to make ● a simple SODA BOTTLE HUMANE MOUSETRAP (that works!)”, was published June 11, 2016. Its description identifies a soda bottle, “a few other common items,” wire cutters, a cordless drill, and a dab of peanut butter bait. The description reviewed does not provide bottle dimensions, a complete parts list, or a full assembly sequence. It also does not report measured results.
The creator says mice remain calm and are not harmed. Those are claims about the video’s design, not independently established findings. The RSPCA guidance below does not assess this particular bottle trap; it does explain why design, monitoring, and care after capture matter for any live trap.
Why a live trap needs a welfare plan
RSPCA Australia says the humaneness of a live trap depends on its design and how often it is checked. A mechanism should not catch an animal’s tail or limbs, and the animal must not be left to suffer from starvation, dehydration, or cold stress. RSPCA UK likewise warns that live-catch traps can create serious welfare problems and that the person setting one is responsible for the confined animal.

Checking guidance depends on the circumstances and location. RSPCA Australia says live traps must be inspected every morning. RSPCA UK’s advice to check every two hours applies to a live rat or mouse brought in by a cat; it is not a universal interval for every trap. Follow the relevant local guidance, and do not set a live trap if you cannot inspect it as required and respond promptly.
What happens after capture?
Relocation does not guarantee a humane outcome. RSPCA Australia says survival after relocation is often low. A 2022 RSPCA UK leaflet says it was not aware of studies establishing outcomes for rats and mice released elsewhere, and describes risks such as unfamiliar food and shelter, competition, and predation. The leaflet also discusses legal responsibilities in the UK; check current local rules rather than assuming that guidance applies in other places.

Plan what you will do before setting any trap. If you find an injured or immobile animal, seek advice from an appropriate local animal-welfare or veterinary service rather than assuming that release is suitable. RSPCA UK’s two-hour checking recommendation is specifically for a rodent brought in by a cat; its guidance says to release such an animal outside if it appears uninjured and mobile.
Reduce food and entry points first
Removing what attracts mice and blocking access can reduce the need for trapping. RSPCA Australia recommends these steps:

- Store opened food in metal, glass, or heavy-duty plastic containers with tight-fitting lids.
- Secure pet food or discard leftovers, and sweep up food remains and rubbish.
- Use secure rubbish bins.
- Keep screens intact and doors closed.
- Seal holes that rodents could use to enter.
How to choose a control approach
RSPCA Australia recommends comparing pest-control methods by effectiveness, cost, target specificity, practicality, and humaneness. For a live-capture option, also consider injury risk, the conditions in which the animal will be held, the effort required for frequent inspection, and the uncertainty of relocation outcomes.
The available sources do not establish a product-level comparison between a soda-bottle design and commercial live-capture traps, so they cannot support a ranking or endorsement of either. If you are considering a bottle build, use the video as a demonstration rather than proof of performance, and do not improvise missing construction or safety details as though they were verified.
