Vermont Villa is a custom, two-story container home by Backcountry Containers with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, several living areas, terraces, and a separate sauna-and-plunge-pool unit. It is a distinctive project, not a typical container-home floor plan: the main house uses four heavily modified shipping containers, and the amenity unit adds a fifth.
How Vermont Villa is built
In a feature published April 5, 2026, New Atlas reported that the main house uses three standard 20-foot (about 6 m) containers and one container twice that length. The containers were extensively modified with windows and doors. Backcountry Containers’ SaunaPlunge adds another container to the overall project.
The four-container house is arranged over two floors. Its layout includes two bedrooms and two bathrooms, but the published description does not specify the construction details or fixtures of the second bathroom. The project’s unusual amount of interior space reflects its particular container configuration and modifications; it should not be taken as a measure of what a container home typically provides.
What the interior includes
Kitchen and main living room
The main living area combines a kitchen and dining space with an adjacent living room. The kitchen has an oven and cooktop, a full-size fridge/freezer, sink and microwave, plus a dining table for four. In the living room, a large sofa faces an electric fireplace and wall-mounted television; numerous windows bring in daylight.

Second living area and laundry
A separate living area has a sofa and wall-mounted video game system. The home also includes a wash area with a sink and stacked washer and dryer, as shown in New Atlas’s image captions.
Bedrooms and bathrooms
The compact master bedroom has a double bed and storage. The second bedroom uses bunk beds and opens onto its own outdoor terrace. The described main bathroom has a shower, separate freestanding tub, vanity sink and flushing toilet. No corresponding fixture list is given for the other bathroom.

Outdoor spaces
Vermont Villa includes ground-floor and rooftop terrace areas. The secondary bedroom’s terrace adds a private outdoor connection, while the rooftop provides another place to spend time outside.
The SaunaPlunge: an adjacent sauna and plunge pool
The SaunaPlunge is a separate unit from the main house. New Atlas reports that its sauna area accommodates up to four adults and uses an electric heater; the adjoining plunge pool is described as fitting up to six adults. These are the reported capacities, not a claim that the pool is a full-size swimming pool.

New Atlas reported a price of US$49,500 for the SaunaPlunge alone in its April 5, 2026 feature. That figure is an article-reported price, not a current verified quote. The article does not disclose the total cost of Vermont Villa, so the project cannot be described as inexpensive or assigned an overall budget based on that figure.

Vermont Villa shows how a custom container project can combine a multi-room house with a separate wellness space, but the result depends on design choices beyond container count. For a comparable project, clarify the following before treating a concept or advertised unit price as a complete construction budget:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Layout and container configuration: establish the container lengths, how they connect, and how openings, windows and doors affect the plan.
- Room and amenity requirements: specify bedroom and bathroom fixtures, laundry, living areas, and any outdoor terraces rather than assuming they are included in a basic container package.
- Sauna and electrical design: confirm heater sizing and electrical requirements for the actual sauna design; the general fact that this unit has an electric heater does not identify its brand or model.
- Pool capacity and use: distinguish a plunge pool from a full-size swimming pool and verify dimensions and intended occupancy for the unit being considered.
- Complete project costs: request a current, itemized quote covering the home and any separate amenity unit. The published US$49,500 figure covers only the SaunaPlunge as reported, not the house or total project.
- Availability and delivery: verify current specifications, availability and delivery coverage directly with the builder before making plans.
