Shonda Rhimes reportedly paid about $15.17 million for a Westport, Connecticut, estate in October 2022. Architectural Digest later reported the price as $15.175 million. Coverage described a 7.5-acre property with an approximately 38,000-square-foot, 11-bedroom home, but those figures come from published accounts and have not been independently verified here.
How much did Shonda Rhimes pay for the Westport estate?
The Westport Journal reported in October 2022 that Rhimes bought the estate for $15.17 million, citing the Wall Street Journal’s reported sale price. Architectural Digest’s later account gives the purchase price as $15.175 million and dates the purchase to October 2022. The small difference reflects the figures as those publications reported them; neither should be read as a current valuation.
The Westport Journal identified Melissa and Doug Bernstein, founders of the Melissa & Doug toy company, as the sellers. At the time of that newspaper’s account, the transaction had not yet appeared in the town’s property-transfer records.
What is reported about the property?
Contemporary coverage placed the estate off Easton Road in Westport. This reporting does not establish a more precise address or independently confirm the parcel details.

- Land and house: CT Insider, citing Mansion Global, described 7.5 acres and a home of approximately 38,000 square feet.
- Bedrooms: The same account reported 11 bedrooms.
- Amenities: The Westport Journal listed a pool, tennis court, bowling alley and pizza oven.
- Style and construction: Architectural Digest described a sprawling New England Colonial-style home commissioned by the Bernsteins and built in 2008.
These are published descriptions, not independently measured specifications or confirmation of the property’s present-day condition.
What did the reports mean by a Westport sales record?
The Westport Journal attributed to seller-side Compass agent Karen Scott’s Instagram post a claim that the sale was Westport’s highest-priced non-waterfront property sale at the time. That is a historical, attributed claim about non-waterfront sales—not evidence of the town’s current record in 2026.

Why did Rhimes say she moved to Westport?
In its account of a Westport Library fundraising event, the Westport Journal reported that Rhimes answered a question about managing fame and a demanding schedule with, “You move to Westport.” The paper also quoted her saying, “Most people here are interested in their families and their lives … Somehow here none of that [fame] matters, and that’s delightful to me.” These quotations are reported by the newspaper as remarks at the event.

The Town of Westport Assessor’s Office says property records and field cards are available through Vision Appraisal and describes the data as updated daily. The particular parcel record was not retrieved for this account, so current ownership, assessment, tax bill and property condition are not established here. The town’s records can be accessed through the Westport Assessor’s Office.
