The report describes the intended approach, but publishes no measurement of how much erosion was reduced.
Where the restoration took place
The completed works were at Cooleenup Island, on a South Yunderup waterway. The local report described sharp scarping—water eroding the riverbank into a steep slope—and said the project aimed to stabilise the shoreline and address ongoing erosion. The Shire of Murray’s coastal hazard planning summary also recommends nature-based erosion protection for Cooleenup Island.
How the bank was treated
Brushwall to collect sediment
According to the 12 June 2024 Mandurah Times report, Bindjareb Rangers prepared brushwall before installation, with Shire staff supporting the work. The report describes the brush as a temporary barrier across the sand: water passes through while sediment collects.
Native rushes and sedges to bind sand
Native rush and sedge seedlings were planted behind the brushwall. As they grow, they are intended to join together and bind the sand, helping strengthen the bank. This is the reported mechanism, not a published measurement of the planting’s performance.

Why the site was considered at risk
Shire President David Bolt said the treated areas faced higher erosion risk from boat wash and tidal influences: “The areas selected for treatment are at a higher risk of erosion due to boat wash and tidal influences, making this restoration particularly critical,” he said.
The Shire’s coastal hazard planning summary recommends nature-based erosion protection at South Yunderup Foreshore, Yunderup Island, Ballee Island, Coopers Mill and Cooleenup Island. Confirmed council minutes dated 18 April 2024 state that short-term adaptation actions under the plan were being implemented, including soft-engineered erosion works along parts of riverbanks in South Yunderup and the Delta Islands. These broader planning sources provide context; they do not independently document every detail of the Cooleenup installation.

What is—and is not—known about the outcome
The published project report gives no project-specific figure for cost, shoreline length treated, number of seedlings planted or measured erosion reduction. It also does not establish the long-term performance of the brushwall or planting. The practical takeaway is that the Shire reported completing a nature-based bank-stabilisation project, but the available published details do not quantify its results.
The report said further restoration works were planned for Yunderup Island later in June 2024. That was a plan reported at the time, not confirmation that the additional work occurred.
