What happened in Spearwood and Beaconsfield?
On Friday, 6 June 2025, a sewerage main burst on Hamilton Road in Spearwood. Wastewater flowed down the residential street. ABC News reported that it entered two homes and affected the front yards of four others. ABC News reported on the initial spill and response.
Authorities switched off pump stations and diverted wastewater to manage the flow. On the morning of 7 June, the diverted flow was followed by another burst in Beaconsfield, flooding Bruce Lee Reserve. The initial failure and the second burst should not be conflated: reporting attributed the second burst to pressure from the diversion, but did not establish why the Hamilton Road main failed.
Were residents evacuated?
Authorities told people to stay away from Hamilton Road and Watsonia Park and to obey warning signs and barricades. The cited coverage does not establish that officials issued a general evacuation order. ABC later reported that South Fremantle resident Donald Allison could not return to his affected home six months after the incident; that is an individual displacement, not evidence that all nearby residents were evacuated. How the spill affected homes, parks and waterways
The spill disrupted residential areas and public green space. Bruce Lee Reserve was expected to remain closed for months while remediation continued, even after the permanent pipe repair was reported complete. Authorities also restricted water recreation in affected parts of the Swan River and Fremantle Harbour. Those were incident-period precautions, not a statement of current water or park conditions.
Residents described lingering odour and disruption. April Peck, a Spearwood resident quoted by PerthNow, said: “Despite having all our windows and doors closed since Friday, the stench continues to permeate our home.” PerthNow’s coverage of residents and businesses during cleanup.

Businesses and Fremantle Sailing Club felt the disruption
Local businesses reported reduced trade during the disruption. A bakery worker told PerthNow that sales at their business had fallen by an estimated 25 to 30 per cent. That was the worker’s estimate for one business, not a measured loss across the area.
Fremantle Sailing Club cancelled some in-water training and school sailing lessons while water activities were restricted. The effects therefore extended beyond properties directly reached by wastewater: odour, access controls and water-safety precautions also interrupted local activity.

Pipe repair was completed before community recovery
By 17 June 2025, ABC reported that the permanent pipe fix was complete. Repairing the main did not immediately restore affected parks or homes. Green-space remediation was still expected to take longer, with Bruce Lee Reserve potentially closed for months.
In its 2025 annual report, Water Corporation described the incident as a major sewer-main burst along Hamilton Road in Spearwood and Caesar Street in Beaconsfield, with overflows in parks and residential areas. The utility said crews repaired damage, disinfected affected areas, coordinated restoration with local governments and deployed a customer-support caravan. Recovery for residents could take substantially longer than infrastructure repairs. In January 2026, ABC reported that Donald Allison’s South Fremantle home remained uninhabitable six months after the incident while repair and insurance matters were unresolved. ABC also reported the utility’s position that insurers handle claims and repairs, alongside the corporation’s account of cleanup, temporary accommodation and an offer to reimburse an insurance excess. Those statements describe the parties’ accounts, not a universal outcome for every affected household.

- Keep clear of the affected area. Do not cross barricades or warning signs, and avoid contact with wastewater or potentially affected water.
- Report an overflow or damage. Water Corporation’s general guidance is to call 13 13 75 immediately if wastewater is overflowing on or near a property or causing damage. The corporation says it will provide initial cleanup and assist affected customers. Water Corporation guidance on sewer overflows.
- Ask about immediate support and document the damage. The same guidance says temporary accommodation may be supported for the initial night in severe cases where a home is uninhabitable. Photograph damage when it is safe, keep records of communications and expenses, and contact your insurer about the property-repair and claims process.
- Use the complaints pathway if needed. Water Corporation’s guidance describes its complaint process and referral options, including the Energy and Water Ombudsman WA. Its general advice does not establish how any particular Spearwood claim was handled.
What caused the first burst?
The available reporting does not establish why the Hamilton Road main failed. ABC reported that Water Corporation would inspect the pipe; a pressure spike was mentioned only as a possibility. The pressure link reported for the diversion applies to the second burst in Beaconsfield, not a confirmed cause of the first failure.
