How to Choose a Sewing Machine for Your Projects

Choose a sewing machine around the work you plan to do: basic repairs, garment sewing, quilting, embroidery, or homewares. Then match its controls, fabric capacity, workspace, and features to those jobs. A larger stitch count alone does not make a machine the right choice.

Start with the projects you will sew

List the work you expect to do most often and the fabrics it involves. A machine for occasional hems and repairs has different priorities from one for garment construction, quilting, or decorative embroidery. Consider how large your projects are, whether you need to move the machine, and how much room you have to support fabric.

  • Repairs and alterations: straightforward controls, a useful selection of basic stitches, and access to the area around sleeves and trouser legs can matter more than a long stitch menu.
  • Garment sewing: stitch variety, adjustable speed, good lighting, and convenient thread cutting may make repeated construction steps easier.
  • Quilting: check the available work area and whether the machine has a drop-feed function for free-motion quilting. A pivot feature can help when turning fabric.
  • Embroidery: consider a combined sewing-and-embroidery machine only if machine embroidery is part of the work you actually plan to do.
  • Homewares and larger projects: check how much space is available to support fabric and whether the machine’s intended use suits the materials and project scale.

These are selection criteria, not a model ranking. Brother International South Africa’s buyer’s guide advises buyers to consider sewing type and project scale; its recommendations and local commercial details should not be assumed to apply in other markets.

Mechanical or computerized: choose the controls you need

Consideration Mechanical machine Computerized machine
How settings are chosen Typically selected with manual dials. Digital controls can adjust settings; the available adjustments vary by model.
Operation Brother’s guide describes operation with a foot pedal. Some models add a start-stop button and speed slider, and may operate without a foot pedal.
Stitch options Usually fewer stitch choices and basic functions. Can offer more stitch choices; the number and types depend on the model.
Best fit to consider Basic sewing, repairs, and alterations such as hems or pocket repairs. Projects where digital adjustment, speed control, or a broader stitch selection will be useful.

These category descriptions come from Brother’s guide, not an independent head-to-head test. A computerized machine does not necessarily include every automation feature, so check the exact model’s specifications and manual. For either type, look at practical details such as lighting, free-arm access, and how easily you can reach and handle the bobbin.

Match special features to the job

For garment construction

Stitch variety and speed control can help with different garment seams and materials. Brother also identifies thread cutting and lighting as useful features to look for. Decide which will affect your routine rather than paying attention only to the total stitch count.

For quilting

A drop-feed function is relevant if you want to move fabric freely for free-motion quilting. A pivot function can help when turning at corners. Also consider whether the machine gives your quilt enough room to sit and move without strain.

For embroidery, edge finishing, and hems

A combined sewing-and-embroidery machine is an option when decorative machine embroidery is a real requirement. An overlocker is a separate, specialized machine: Brother describes it as trimming raw edges and making stretch seams. A cover-stitch machine makes hems and other cover seams without trimming fabric. Neither is simply another name for a standard household sewing machine.

Check fabric capacity, workspace, and portability

Before buying, confirm that the specific machine is suitable for the fabrics you expect to sew. Household entry-level machines may not be designed for heavy commercial work, and a machine’s category or stitch count does not establish what materials it can handle. Brother’s South Africa guide cautions against assuming entry-level home machines suit heavy commercial tasks.

  • Check the manual or manufacturer specifications for supported fabric and needle types.
  • Think about the size of your usual work and whether the machine provides enough space to guide it.
  • Look for a free arm if you expect to sew tubular areas such as sleeves or trouser hems.
  • If you will move or store the machine often, include its size and portability in the decision.
  • Ask a retailer whether you can try the machine or see a demonstration; Brother recommends demonstrations and retailer advice as part of choosing.

Needles, bobbins, and common sewing problems

Choosing needles and sewing heavy fabric

Needle requirements depend on the machine, needle system, fabric, and task. Singer’s support guidance recommends a denim needle for denim and size 16 or 18 needles for other heavy fabrics, but those recommendations should not override the machine manual. Test the setup on a scrap of the same fabric before sewing the project.

Singer recommends changing needles every 6 to 8 hours of use. Treat that as Singer’s guidance, not a universal interval: use, fabric, needle condition, and the machine can affect when a replacement is appropriate.

  • LARGE NEEDLE-TO-ARM WORKSPACE: A larger workspace with increased width in needle-to-arm space allows users to work on larger projects

Using the right bobbin

Do not choose a bobbin because it looks similar to the one you have. Singer warns that types such as Class 66, Class 15, and Class 15J can differ, and an incorrect bobbin may cause damage. Check your model’s manual or exact manufacturer information before buying replacement bobbins or needles.

When stitches skip or thread bunches

If stitches skip, Singer lists a dull or damaged needle, incorrect needle insertion, or disrupted timing among possible causes. Thread bunching underneath the fabric can point to upper-threading or tension setup; loops on top can point to bobbin insertion or threading. These are starting points for troubleshooting, not a diagnosis for every machine. Recheck threading and needle setup against your manual before changing settings or attempting repairs.

Set up and maintain the machine safely

  1. Use the machine’s manual to thread it, insert the bobbin, and select a compatible needle.
  2. Lower the presser foot before sewing, as Singer advises.
  3. Turn the handwheel toward you, not away from you. Singer warns that turning it the other way may throw off the timing and require service.
  4. Follow the model’s manual for cleaning and lubrication. Singer says some machines are pre-lubricated and need no extra oil when the manual does not instruct the owner to oil them.
  5. For servicing, Singer suggests a qualified tune-up every 3 to 4 years. This is Singer’s recommendation, not a universal schedule; follow your manufacturer’s maintenance guidance and seek service if the machine develops a problem.

Check local terms before you buy

Prices and warranty coverage depend on country, retailer, and model. Brother International South Africa’s guide gives South African rand price ranges for entry-level machines and states a one-year carry-in warranty for Brother sewing and embroidery machines. Those details are specific to that guide and should not be treated as current prices or warranty terms elsewhere. Confirm the price, warranty, servicing arrangements, and included accessories with the seller in your market.
