For a documented starting point, WOOD’s square design finishes at 17-3/8 × 17-3/8 × 2-1/2 inches; Kreg’s separate plan supplies its own cut list and uses pocket-hole joinery. Choose a plan by its depth, interior support, access design, and required tools, then adapt the layout to your objects.
Choose dimensions and interior support for the objects
Measure the items you intend to display, including their depth, and decide how they will sit or hang inside the case. Allow room for the arrangement and any dividers or attachment points. The dimensions in a published plan describe that design, not a universal shadow-box standard.
WOOD’s documented square design
WOOD lists a finished size of 17-3/8 × 17-3/8 × 2-1/2 inches for its shadow box plan, which appeared in WOOD Issue 143 in August 2002; the project page was updated March 7, 2025. It describes the case as adaptable for collections: lightweight pieces may be attached with adhesive or fine thread, while heavier objects may need dividers. See the WOOD shadow box plan.
Plan the display before cutting
- Measure the largest object and the full arrangement, not just the visible front.
- Check that the chosen interior depth can accommodate the objects.
- Decide how each object will be supported. Lightweight items may suit adhesive or fine thread; heavier pieces may need dividers.
- Confirm the plan’s finished dimensions and cut list before purchasing materials.
Compare the documented plan options
These examples are different projects, not interchangeable versions of one standard design. Compare what each plan establishes before deciding which suits your display.

The examples establish different approaches to size, support, access, and format, but do not establish a single best plan. Confirm the current format and inclusions on the seller’s page when ordering.
Build the Kreg design in assemblies
Kreg’s plan organizes the work into a frame, a box, and a back, which are assembled and then joined. Its tool list includes a pocket-hole jig, compact drill, random-orbit sander, miter saw, and tape measure. The specified materials include 1/2-inch boards, wood glue, 1-inch fine-thread pocket-hole screws, brad nails, and a sawtooth hanger. The material list is for one frame; use the plan’s own cut list and drawing for its dimensions and quantities. See Kreg’s plan page and its downloadable project plan.

- Make and assemble the frame parts. Follow Kreg’s cut list and assembly directions for the frame.
- Make and assemble the box parts. Keep the case dimensions consistent with the plan drawing.
- Assemble the back. Use the plan’s specified construction and fasteners.
- Attach the back and join the box to the frame. Kreg’s sequence treats these as separate assembly steps.
- Finish and add the hanger. The materials list includes a sawtooth hanger; install it as directed for the completed design.
The pocket-hole jig and 1-inch fine-thread pocket-hole screws are requirements of Kreg’s specified method, not requirements for every shadow box. If you choose a different plan or joinery approach, follow that plan’s tools and fastening details instead.

Front-panel access
Access varies by design. Rockler’s separate display-box plan uses an unscrewing top and removable Plexiglass viewing panel, plus a small drawer. That is one documented access arrangement; it should not be assumed to be part of the Kreg or WOOD designs.

Download or paper plan
Kreg provides a project-plan download, Rockler lists a downloadable plan, and Woodcraft lists a paper plan whose product page says materials are not included. Check the specific listing for the format and what comes with the purchase. The cited examples do not establish a universal glazing material or thickness for shadow boxes.
