If it has already been shaken, run it normally for a few sessions to see whether the cloudiness improves, but it may not clear; do not open or refill the sealed bottle.
Why shaking can make a lava lamp cloudy
A lava lamp’s motion comes from heat: warming expands the wax so it rises through the liquid, and cooling makes it sink again. Shaking or moving the lamp while warm can cloud the liquid or damage the wax flow. Mathmos states in its official FAQ: “No. Moving or shaking a warm lava lamp can cause the liquid to become cloudy or damage the wax flow.” That is manufacturer guidance for Mathmos lamps, not a guarantee that every brand or model will respond identically.
What to do if you have already shaken it
- Leave the bottle closed. Do not open it, pour anything out, or add liquid. Mathmos warns against opening or refilling its sealed bottles.
- Let the lamp cool fully. Avoid moving it again while it is warm.
- Run it normally for a few sessions. Mathmos recommends trying this to see whether cloudiness improves. It does not guarantee the lamp will clear; the company says cloudiness is often irreparable.
- Check model-specific replacement options if cloudiness persists. Mathmos offers replacement bottles for its own products. Confirm the exact model and compatibility with the manufacturer; a Mathmos bottle is not necessarily suitable for another brand or lamp.
Do not try to speed recovery by shaking it again, rapidly cooling it, heating it by another method, or attempting a home refill. The manufacturer’s guidance supports normal operation and patience, not these interventions.
How to move and operate a lava lamp safely
Before moving it
Switch the lamp off and let it cool completely before handling or relocating it. This is Mathmos’ advice for reducing the risk of cloudiness or damaged wax flow.

During operation
Follow the instructions for the specific model. Mathmos’ general guidance for many models says not to run a lamp for more than six hours at a time and warns that overheating shortens product life. That limit is not universal: the company’s Saturn instructions specify a different allowance. Use the manual for your own lamp rather than applying one runtime to every lava lamp.
When replacement may be the practical option
If normal sessions do not improve persistent cloudiness, a compatible replacement bottle may be an option where the manufacturer offers one. Compatibility is model-specific, so identify the lamp before ordering and confirm fit with the manufacturer. Do not assume that bottles are interchangeable across brands or models.
