A single pulley has one sheave; a double pulley has two. The extra sheave can accommodate two rope paths or a more involved haul arrangement, but it does not by itself determine mechanical advantage, effort, or safe working capacity. For construction, rope access, or rescue use, choose based on the planned rope routing, exact equipment ratings, rope compatibility, and instructions for the complete system.
What the terms mean
In this comparison, “single” and “double” refer to the number of sheaves—the grooved wheels that guide the rope—in a rope pulley. A single-sheave pulley is generally a simple, compact way to redirect rope. A double-sheave pulley can guide two strands in parallel and may be useful as one component in a more complex haul system. These terms describe pulley construction, not a complete rigging arrangement.
Petzl describes pulleys as equipment for raising loads and building rescue haul systems in its 2026 Professional Catalog.
How to compare them
| Need or consideration | Single-sheave pulley | Double-sheave pulley |
|---|---|---|
| Simple redirection | Often a compact, straightforward option. | May add size or capacity that the task does not need. |
| Two rope paths or a more complex haul | May require additional devices or a different layout. | Can guide two strands in parallel and serve as a component in a more complex system. |
| Mechanical advantage | Set by the full rope routing and load-bearing strands, not the single sheave alone. | Also set by the full rope routing; two sheaves do not establish a particular ratio. |
| Size and weight | Often smaller within a comparable product family; check the exact model. | Can be larger or heavier; designs vary. |
| Efficiency and upkeep | Check sheave size, bearing type, ratings, and maintenance instructions. | Check the same factors, as well as any limits on loading each sheave. |
| Fit and safety | Confirm rope range, load limits, certification, and intended application. | Confirm the same details; do not assume each sheave is an independently rated system. |
This is a selection framework, not a universal ranking. The exact model and complete system determine suitability.

Sheave count does not set mechanical advantage
Mechanical advantage depends on how many rope strands support the moving load and how the entire system is routed. Friction, pulley efficiency, and rope angles also affect the force required in practice. A double pulley is not automatically a 2:1 system and does not automatically halve the effort. Work out the rope path and load-bearing strands for the system rather than inferring a ratio from the number of sheaves. SKYLOTEC’s pulley guidance likewise emphasizes checking the system and the individual product’s applicable standard and manufacturer limits.
Efficiency depends on the exact pulley
Sheave size and bearing type influence efficiency. Petzl’s 2026 Professional Catalog describes sealed ball bearings as very efficient and self-lubricating bushings as requiring regular maintenance. Compare the manufacturer’s information for the specific model rather than assuming all pulleys of one type perform alike.

Functions to multiply forces that make it possible for a single person to control heavy loads with minimal effort. 【Prusik-minding】The side plates feature flat bottom that blocks the passage of Prusik knots, allowing the use of Prusik cords to configure a progress capture system that locks the load in place when tension is released.
- 【40kN, CE/UIAA Certified】Made of advanced materials to withstand a super high breaking strength of 40 kN=2 x (10kN+10kN). CE and UIAA certified, the Micro Double Pulley complies with safety standards required across a wide range of operations, ensuring safe use in high-demand situations. Configure personal mechanical advantage systems that function to rig loads in mountaineering, rescue a stranded car or boat, or haul your partner out of a deep crevasse.
- 【Easy Use】With the moving side plates, there's no need to thread the rope through the pulleys from the far end. Simply rotate the side plates to expose the sheave wheels, allowing for quick rope installation and removal. Time-saving, particularly when modifying pulley configurations. The side plates close flush at the top, forming a single-point connection that offers universal compatibility with carabiners.
- 【Simplify Set-up】The bottom becket, integrated into the pulley's central plate, offers an extra rope attachment point, minimizing hardware and simplifying system configuration. 【High Efficiency】The ball bearing minimizes friction through point contact with the axle, ensuring smooth rotation and optimal efficiency, perfect for high-speed operations.
Manufacturer figures illustrate why model matters
CMC lists the following specifications for two aluminum Prusik-minding rescue pulley options. The product page does not state a publication year; the figures below were listed by the manufacturer when accessed in 2026.
| CMC model | Listed weight | Listed strength | Rope compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Rescue Pulley, item 300301 | 145 g | 52 kN 3-sigma minimum breaking strength | Up to 13 mm |
| Double Rescue Pulley, item 300302 | 249 g | 45 kN 3-sigma minimum breaking strength | Up to 13 mm |
These are model-specific manufacturer specifications, not category-wide rules. Minimum breaking strength is not a working-load limit or a rating for a completed system; do not treat those values as interchangeable. The figures also show why a double pulley cannot be assumed to be stronger than a single one. See CMC’s Aluminum Prusik Minding Rescue Pulley page for product information and instructions.

Choose for the task, then verify the system
- For straightforward rope redirection, consider a single-sheave model if its ratings, rope range, and intended application fit the job.
- If the planned system needs two parallel rope paths, consider a double-sheave model designed for that use.
- Check the exact model’s rated capacity, rope compatibility, certification, materials, bearing type, and maintenance requirements.
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions for how each sheave may be loaded. CMC explicitly warns for its double rescue pulley: “Do not load only a single side of a double sheave pulley.”
- For rescue, work at height, or other life-safety use, follow applicable standards, the product instructions, and appropriate training; evaluate the complete system rather than relying on the pulley alone.
The phrase “single pulley vs. double pulley” can also refer to equipment in sailing, arboriculture, gym systems, or industrial lifting. This comparison addresses rope pulleys for hauling, rope access, and rescue; requirements may differ in other disciplines.
