Singapore’s planned 8 Shenton Way tower was presented in 2022 as a 305-metre, 63-storey mixed-use skyscraper whose design draws on bamboo forests. Bamboo is part of the proposed architectural palette—not a claim that the tower’s main structure is made from bamboo. The figures and features below describe the plans reported at the time, not confirmed construction progress or a verified current completion date.
What is Singapore’s bamboo-inspired skyscraper?
8 Shenton Way is a planned tower in Singapore designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). In a 2 November 2022 report, New Atlas described a concept inspired by bamboo forests, with a mix of offices, public spaces, retail, a hotel and luxury residences. The residences were planned for the tower’s upper levels. New Atlas’s 2022 report attributes the design details to plans revealed by SOM.
“Bamboo-inspired” refers to the overall design concept and proposed material palette. The reported palette included engineered bamboo, terracotta, glass and concrete; the account does not say that bamboo would form the tower’s primary structure. That distinction matters: a building can use bamboo as a visible architectural material without using it as its main load-bearing system.
How tall was 8 Shenton Way planned to be?
The 2022 report gave the planned height as 305 metres (1,000 feet), with 63 floors and 148,000 square metres of floor space—about 1.6 million square feet. Those are figures from SOM’s plans as reported then, not a confirmation that the building has been completed to those specifications.

At that planned height, the tower would exceed Singapore’s 284-metre (931-foot) Guoco Tower if built as described. This is a comparison of planned height with Guoco Tower’s reported height, not a statement about Singapore’s current tallest building or 8 Shenton Way’s present status.
What materials and facade features were proposed?
SOM’s description, reproduced by New Atlas, emphasized natural materials and curved facade edges: “The building facade is characterized by natural materials – champagne-colored terracotta and bamboo along the walls of the sky gardens – with curved edges that create bay windows on nearly every floor, offering vast sightlines of the city and the sea,” said SOM.

The reported use of engineered bamboo was associated with the design, including the walls of sky gardens. Terracotta, glass and concrete were also part of the proposed palette. The available account does not specify the structural system, so the facade materials should not be read as a description of the tower’s frame.
How do the gardens and terraces fit into the design?
The 2022 plans described seven landscaped terraces and gardens distributed through the tower. They were presented as places that could bring greenery, daylight, outdoor space and natural ventilation into a high-rise development. These are design intentions, not measured evidence of indoor comfort, air quality or operational performance.

The same report characterized contactless technology, antimicrobial materials, ventilation and filtration, and outdoor work areas as post-pandemic design features. It did not establish health outcomes from those features.
What sustainability measures were reported?
The plans included reusing parts of the existing foundation and infrastructure, glazing intended to reduce solar heat gain, and recyclable materials. Together, these measures indicate approaches the design was meant to pursue; they do not establish the project’s eventual environmental performance.

The report gave 2028 as the scheduled completion target when it was published in 2022. That was the schedule reported at the time, not a verified current forecast. The available information does not establish construction progress as of 8 October 2026, whether the original specifications remain unchanged, or the tower’s eventual height ranking.
