A 2025 Purdue-led study found that scented wax melts can trigger the formation of airborne nanoparticles when fragrance chemicals react with ozone indoors. In the researchers’ residential test house, particle concentrations exceeded one million particles per cubic centimeter. That supports a comparison with certain combustion sources on specific particle measures—not a finding that wax melts create the same overall pollution as car exhaust in ordinary homes.
What the study measured
The paper, “Flame-Free Candles Are Not Pollution-Free: Scented Wax Melts as a Significant Source of Atmospheric Nanoparticles,” was published online February 3, 2025, in Environmental Science & Technology Letters (volume 12, issue 2, pages 175–182). Researchers used real-time instruments in Purdue’s zEDGE residential test house to measure particle size distributions and terpene levels while scented wax melts were heated. Read the study.
The study is specifically about scented wax melts. It does not establish that every scented candle, air freshener, or other fragranced home product behaves the same way.
How flame-free fragrance can form particles
A wax warmer does not burn the melt, but heating it can release fragrance chemicals called terpenes. The researchers’ proposed mechanism is that these terpenes react with ozone already present indoors, initiating the formation of new airborne particles. “Flame-free” therefore describes the absence of a flame at the warmer; it does not mean the fragrance cannot participate in indoor-air chemistry.

Purdue researcher Brandon Boor described the particle comparison this way: “We found that even though the wax warmer, the wax melt has no combustion involved, we’re actually generating similar amounts of airborne nanoparticles as you would have with a candle.” His statement concerns nanoparticle amounts, not equivalence in total emissions or health effects. What “as much as car exhaust” does—and does not—mean
The paper reports nanoparticle concentrations above 106 particles per cubic centimeter under its test conditions. It compares particle concentrations and production rates over selected size ranges with results reported for sources including scented candles, gas stoves, diesel engines, and natural-gas engines. Those comparisons make the headline’s shorthand understandable, but they do not demonstrate that a wax melt produces the same overall air pollution as a vehicle.

- Pollutant: The comparison is about particle-number measures, not every pollutant in exhaust or indoor air.
- Particle size: The comparisons use particular size ranges; they are not a blanket match across all particles.
- Setting and conditions: Wax-melt measurements came from a residential test house, while combustion-source measurements may involve different settings and conditions. The figures should not be read as a direct real-world equivalence for every home or vehicle.
- Health outcome: The paper discusses respiratory deposited dose rates and potential implications. It does not report diagnosed disease caused by wax-melt use.
The broad car-exhaust wording is also used in coverage of the paper, but should be understood as a particle comparison rather than a statement that the two sources are identical. BGR’s coverage.
What the findings mean for health
Finding airborne particles is evidence of an exposure pathway; it is not, by itself, proof that a particular consumer will become ill. The study does not provide a population-level illness rate, a clinical disease count attributable to wax melts, or an established consumer exposure threshold for this use. It therefore cannot answer how much an individual’s risk changes from using a melt in a particular room.

What the unscented-melt control tells us
In this experiment, the researchers reported no significant terpene emissions when they heated their unscented wax melts. That is a result for the study’s control product and conditions. It does not establish that every unscented product is emission-free or safe, and the study did not evaluate specific retail brands.
