Cloudy glasses after a dishwasher cycle are not always a detergent problem. A removable white film or spots often come from hard-water minerals; lingering food residue is another possibility. A lasting, sometimes rainbow-like haze may be etching—damage to the glass that detergent cannot reverse. Identify which problem you have before changing products or adding more detergent.
How to tell mineral film from etching
Mineral deposits can leave a whitish or powdery film as water evaporates. The American Cleaning Institute explains that this residue is caused by hard-water minerals, not undissolved detergent, and that the same minerals cause spotting. Food residue can also make glassware look cloudy, so check that the dishes are being loaded and cleaned as directed by the appliance manual.
Etching is different: it changes the glass surface rather than leaving a removable deposit. A persistent haze, especially one with an iridescent or rainbow appearance, can indicate etching. The City of Lincoln Water System cautions that if cloudiness remains after an appropriate mineral-cleaning method, the glass may be etched. Etching is generally permanent; detergent, rinse aid, or a machine cleaner will not restore the damaged surface.
What is the best dishwasher detergent for hard water?
There is no current, independently verified universal winner established by the available product comparisons. For hard water, choose an automatic dishwasher detergent whose directions fit your machine and water conditions, then use the amount specified for that hardness. The American Cleaning Institute says, “Generally, soft water requires less detergent while hard water requires more.” Check your local water utility’s hardness information and follow both the detergent label and dishwasher manual; do not exceed package directions.

Format matters chiefly because it affects how precisely you can follow the recommended dose. A single-dose tab is convenient, but it does not let you adjust the amount in the same way as a detergent with dosing directions for different conditions. Do not assume that using extra detergent will prevent haze: too much detergent in very soft water can contribute to etching. Appliance-specific instructions take priority over general advice.
Consumer Reports’ article, updated December 17, 2018, described testing three additives—Finish Power Up Booster Agent, Glisten Dishwasher Cleaner & Hard Water Spot Remover, and Lemi Shine Original—and reported that all removed haze in its test when used as directed. It also named Cascade Complete ActionPacs and Finish Powerball Tabs among detergent recommendations at that time. These are historical examples, not a current ranking or proof that today’s formulations will work for every household.

When rinse aid can help
Rinse aid improves water sheeting, helping water and minerals run off rather than dry as spots. The American Cleaning Institute and the City of Lincoln recommend it as an aid for spotting or cloudy dishes. Use the rinse-aid compartment and setting specified by your dishwasher manual. Rinse aid can improve drying and reduce mineral spots, but it cannot repair etched glass.
What to do about removable mineral haze
- Check your water hardness. Ask your local water utility for the hardness level or follow its guidance for testing. Hardness varies by location, so a detergent that works well in one home may not be dosed the same way in another.
- Set detergent and rinse aid according to the manuals. Follow the dishwasher’s instructions and the product label for your water conditions. Never exceed the detergent directions; increasing the dose indiscriminately can damage glassware.
- Use only a compatible cleaning method. The City of Lincoln suggests a hard-water detergent and rinse aid or conditioner for cloudy dishes. It says mineral deposits may be addressed with vinegar or a purpose-made cleaner in an empty dishwasher, but machine instructions differ. Use such a method only if your dishwasher manual allows it, and follow the manual’s directions. Do not mix cleaners or put vinegar in the machine contrary to its instructions.
- Reassess the glass. If a compatible mineral-removal method does not clear the haze, or the glass has a rainbow-like change, etching is possible. Repeatedly increasing detergent or running harsher cleaning cycles will not reverse surface damage.
The American Cleaning Institute gives general consumer guidance of 140°F as an ideal water temperature and 120°F as a lower bound. These are not a substitute for your dishwasher’s instructions or household hot-water safety: consult the appliance manual before changing a temperature setting.

Protect delicate or valuable glassware
Some glassware may be especially vulnerable to damage from machine washing. Hand-wash delicate, antique, coated, or valuable pieces when their maker or a conservator advises it. The Corning Museum of Glass discusses washing glass from a conservation perspective; its guidance is relevant when preserving significant or fragile pieces matters more than machine convenience.

A University of Florida-hosted educational handout says a softener may be needed above about 6 grains per gallon. Treat that as historical guidance, not a universal threshold: local water conditions, appliance design, and household needs vary. For a decision about your own supply, use current information from your water utility and the instructions for your dishwasher.
