First identify the surface—such as stainless steel, a countertop, cookware, or an oven—and the soil. Ordinary cooking grease on a kitchen surface is different from baked-on grease inside an oven or on a grill. Check the maker’s care instructions, then choose a cleaner whose label permits use on that specific material and type of soil. No single cleaner is suitable for every surface.
Identify the surface and the kind of grease
Start with the appliance, countertop, cookware, or grill manufacturer’s care instructions. Materials and finishes can react differently to cleaners and scrubbing, so do not assume that a product safe for one surface is safe for another.
- Ordinary cooking grease: Choose a household degreaser labeled for the specific surface, or another cleaner the maker permits.
- Baked-on oven or grill soil: An oven or grill cleaner may be intended for this tougher soil, but these products are often much harsher than general household degreasers. Use one only if its label and the appliance maker allow it.
EPA’s Safer Choice program and product lookup can help identify certified cleaning products. Certification does not mean a product is compatible with every material; check the label and surface maker’s instructions.
A careful cleaning sequence
- Check the care instructions. Confirm what the surface can tolerate and whether the appliance maker restricts particular cleaners or tools.
- Remove loose debris gently. Clear crumbs and loose residue without scratching the surface.
- Choose a labeled cleaner. The current product label should explicitly permit use on the material and the kind of soil you are treating. Do not use an oven or grill cleaner on another surface unless its label allows it.
- Follow the label exactly. Apply the cleaner and leave it in place only for the time and in the manner the product directs. There is no universal soak time for old grease.
- Wipe or rinse as directed. Follow both the cleaner’s label and the appliance maker’s instructions; there is no universal rinsing rule for every product and surface.
There is no established head-to-head comparison here showing that dish soap, baking soda, a degreaser, steam, or oven cleaner works best on old household grease. The appropriate choice depends on the soil, surface compatibility, product directions, hazards, ventilation, and how the product is meant to be removed.

Use oven and grill cleaners with particular care
Poison Control explains that oven and grill cleaners are usually highly caustic and can damage tissue on contact, from irritation to severe burns. Exposure can injure the skin, eyes, airways, or digestive tissues. Read Poison Control’s oven-cleaner safety guidance and follow the product’s current label.
- Avoid direct contact and wear the protective equipment specified by the manufacturer.
- Ventilate the area while using the cleaner.
- Never mix cleaning products unless the label explicitly directs you to do so.
- Keep the cleaner in its original container; never transfer it to another container.
- Keep it closed and out of sight and reach of children and pets.
- Do not use commercial oven-cleaner formulations in a home.
If oven cleaner gets on someone or is inhaled or swallowed, follow the immediate first-aid instructions on Poison Control’s current page and contact Poison Control or webPOISONCONTROL for case-specific guidance. Do not improvise treatment.

Prevent grease from building up
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends routinely cleaning kitchen surfaces and cooking appliances to reduce the chance that crumbs will be heated or burned. Its cooking guidance also recommends using a range hood whenever cooking, preferably one vented outdoors, and leaving it on for 10–20 minutes afterward. Routinely clean the hood’s grease filter as well. See the EPA’s guidance on indoor particulate matter sources and cooking and indoor-air-quality infographic.
