Can a Garden Cure Headaches? What Feverfew and Other Complementary Approaches Can—and Can’t—Do

Feverfew has been studied for migraine prevention, but evidence is inconsistent and low quality. A garden is not a headache cure or replacement for medical care.

No: a garden is not an established cure for headaches or migraine, and growing or eating an herb is not a substitute for prescribed care. Feverfew is the garden plant most closely connected to migraine-prevention research, but the evidence is inconsistent and low quality. A garden can still be a rewarding project; treat it as a hobby, not a headache treatment.

What the evidence says about feverfew

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) describes the evidence for feverfew to prevent migraine as inconsistent. Its June 2023 clinical digest summarizes a 2020 Cochrane review of six studies involving 561 participants: the difference between feverfew and placebo was 0.6 migraine attacks per month. NCCIH rates this evidence low quality and says larger, rigorous studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. NCCIH’s feverfew overview

Those studies concern feverfew preparations used for prevention. They do not establish that growing the plant, chewing its leaves, or spending time in a garden treats headache. The findings also do not show that feverfew can replace a clinician’s recommended treatment.

Risks to know before considering feverfew

“Herbal” does not mean risk-free. NCCIH lists possible digestive problems, mouth irritation from chewing fresh leaves, allergic reactions in people sensitive to ragweed-related plants, and interactions with medicines. Feverfew should not be used during pregnancy. These cautions are reasons not to treat a home-grown plant as a safe, self-directed remedy. NCCIH: Feverfew—Usefulness and Safety

Other complementary approaches are not interchangeable

NCCIH notes limited evidence that coenzyme Q10, magnesium, and riboflavin may affect migraine frequency, as well as qualified evidence for relaxation and some other complementary practices. The evidence differs by approach and outcome; it is not a general endorsement of supplements or a basis for replacing conventional treatment. Supplements may interact with medicines, so discuss them with a health care provider before use. NCCIH: 7 Things To Know About Complementary Health Approaches for Headache and Migraine

When to seek medical advice

Do not let gardening or a home remedy delay assessment of a severe, changing, persistent, or otherwise concerning headache. NHS guidance explains when headaches need medical attention; seek appropriate care if symptoms worry you or worsen. NHS headache guidance

Keep the garden a garden

If you choose to grow feverfew, do so for the gardening project—not with the expectation that it will prevent or cure headaches. Seeds are for growing a plant, not evidence of a proven therapy. Avoid making or consuming home-prepared remedies as a substitute for professional advice or established care.
