“Sequoia bonsai” can mean a coast redwood, a dawn redwood, or a giant sequoia—and their foliage and seasonal care differ. Coast redwood and dawn redwood are the more commonly used bonsai subjects; giant sequoia is seldom used. Identify your tree first, then grow it outdoors, keep its soil moist but well drained, and adjust pruning and seasonal care to its species and local climate.
Which tree is called a sequoia bonsai?
The name can refer to three distinct species. Their foliage is the easiest starting point for identification, and it matters because coast redwood stays evergreen while dawn redwood sheds its foliage in autumn.
| Species | Foliage and identification | Bonsai use and growth |
|---|---|---|
| Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) | Evergreen, with fine needle-like foliage; native to the California and southern Oregon coast. | Back-buds vigorously. Upright forms suit its natural growth. |
| Dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) | Deciduous; foliage falls in autumn. Its needles are opposite, unlike the alternate needles of bald cypress. | Commonly grown as bonsai; can be trained upright, in a clump, or as a forest. |
| Giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) | A separate species from both redwoods above. | Seldom used as bonsai. Its brittle wood can make shaping more difficult. |
These distinctions are described in Bonsai Empire’s redwood guide, the Yarra Valley Bonsai Society’s coast-redwood profile, and The Bonsai Botanist’s dawn-redwood guide.
Where should you keep a redwood bonsai?
Keep redwood bonsai outdoors. A sunny position is a useful starting point, with protection from the hottest summer sun. In winter, protect container-grown roots from frost where local conditions call for it. A bonsai pot exposes roots to conditions that in-ground trees do not face in the same way, so adapt protection to your climate rather than treating one regional calendar as universal.

How do you water and feed a redwood bonsai?
Water to the soil’s condition
Keep the growing medium moist during active growth, but make sure excess water can drain away. Check the soil rather than watering by the calendar: a shallow bonsai pot can dry quickly in warm or windy weather, while persistently waterlogged soil raises the risk of root problems. Do not let coast-redwood soil dry completely; in winter, avoid overwatering it.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) notes that small, shallow bonsai containers may need watering once or twice a day in summer, depending on conditions. That is a possibility, not a fixed schedule: check the tree and its soil before watering. See the RHS bonsai growing guide and the Yarra Valley society’s coast-redwood profile.
Feed with growth in mind
Fertilizer advice varies with species, season, and local growing conditions. Bonsai Empire advises limiting high-nitrogen fertilizer to spring and feeding more cautiously in summer to avoid excessive growth. The Yarra Valley society recommends general-purpose feed mainly in spring and autumn in its Melbourne context. Follow guidance suited to your species and climate rather than combining these into one universal schedule.

How should you prune and shape one?
Upright styling reflects the natural form of redwoods. Vigorous budding also means you may need to select growth often, particularly near pruning scars. Remove unwanted buds while they are small and avoid leaving clusters of shoots at a branch junction; unchecked growth there can create bulky swelling.
Coast redwood
Coast redwood can back-bud heavily around pruning scars. The Yarra Valley society recommends removing unwanted buds promptly and training branches while young, since older wood can be brittle. Where a branch needs positioning, a guy wire may be preferable to forcing it with wire.

Dawn redwood
For dawn redwood, Bonsai Empire recommends removing unwanted buds and pruning long-internode twigs in spring before new buds open. The Bonsai Botanist describes upright, clump, slanting, and forest styles, and recommends pruning new shoots in summer based on the author’s cultivation observations. Those recommendations are not a single calendar that applies everywhere; account for your tree’s growth and local seasons.
Why shoot selection matters
National Bonsai & Penjing Museum Curator Michael James described the risk of leaving too many shoots at one location: “If those shoots and vegetative buds are not selected down to only two from every location, then bulbus accumulations of callous cells start to form, which leads to an undesirable inverse taper of the trunk or branches.” The National Bonsai Foundation published the quotation on January 29, 2020.

When should you repot a redwood bonsai?
Use root growth and drainage to decide when to repot, rather than following a strict annual rule. Bonsai Empire gives about two years as a general redwood guideline. The Yarra Valley society says coast-redwood roots may fill a pot within one or two years and advises watching for drainage problems or a rising rootball. These are inspection prompts, not guaranteed intervals: the tree’s growth, container, and growing conditions affect timing.
Spring is general RHS guidance for repotting bonsai, with autumn an option in mild areas. Plan around your local climate and the tree’s condition. See the RHS bonsai growing guide, Bonsai Empire’s redwood guide, and the Yarra Valley society’s coast-redwood profile.
What soil and tools are useful?
Use a porous bonsai medium that drains freely while retaining enough moisture for the tree. The RHS discusses specialist bonsai compost mixes. Kusamura Bonsai Club relays a coast-redwood mix recommendation based mostly on akadama. These are options, not a universal recipe for every redwood species or climate.
Practical supplies include akadama bonsai soil or another porous bonsai mix, a fine-rose watering can for controlled watering, and branch shears for pruning. They are useful tools, not mandatory products or tested recommendations. See the RHS guide and Kusamura Bonsai Club’s coast-redwood article.
