A differential screw makes a small net movement by combining the motion of two threaded interfaces. With same-hand threads, each interface advances in the same direction, so the movement per revolution is the difference between their leads—not the sum. This lets a mechanism produce fine adjustment from relatively ordinary threads, but it does not by itself guarantee accuracy, repeatability, or low backlash.

How does a differential screw work?

A spindle engages two threaded parts, often one fixed and one movable. As the spindle turns, each threaded interface produces axial motion according to its lead: the distance that a thread advances in one revolution. When both threads have the same hand and their leads are close, their motions mostly cancel. The remaining movement is the difference between the leads.

For same-hand threads, the magnitude of net movement per revolution is:

Net movement per revolution = |L1 − L2|

Here, L1 and L2 are leads, expressed as distance per revolution. For a single-start thread, lead equals pitch; for a multi-start thread, lead is pitch multiplied by the number of starts. If the two threads have opposite hands, assign each lead a direction (a sign) and combine the signed motions. Depending on the arrangement, those motions add rather than cancel.

Converting threads per inch or other thread densities

Thread density is the reciprocal of pitch for a single-start thread. Convert each density to lead before subtracting. For example, 48 threads per inch corresponds to a 1/48-inch lead per revolution for a single-start thread; 336 threads per inch corresponds to 1/336 inch. The difference is about 0.00595 inch per revolution, or roughly 0.151 mm per revolution. This calculation describes the ideal geometric motion from those leads; a product’s specified travel, adjustment sensitivity, and actual performance depend on its design and setup.

Newport expresses its differential-micrometer relationship using pitch variables as 1/Peff = 1/P1 − 1/P2. In that convention, P values represent thread densities rather than lengths per revolution, so the reciprocals are the leads being combined. Do not subtract threads-per-unit-length as though they were leads.

Pilot Screw Adjustment Tool, 90 Degree Carburetor Adjustment Tool
  • 19-INCH STRAIGHT-SHAFT REACH – This extended pilot screw tool measures approximately 19 inches (49 cm), helping it reach past frames, wiring, fuel tanks, and surrounding engine components without the long curved section found on common 110° tools.
  • TRUE 90° RIGHT-ANGLE HEAD – Built as a 90 degree carburetor adjustment tool, the compact right-angle head positions the slotted bit perpendicular to the straight shaft. It provides a direct approach to compatible pilot screws located beneath or beside the carburetor.
  • 360° CONTINUOUS BIT ROTATION – Rotate the handle freely in either direction to turn the screwdriver bit through a full 360 degrees. When used as an ATV carb adjustment tool, it allows small, controlled adjustments where a conventional screwdriver cannot be repositioned easily.
  • NON-SPRING INTERNAL LINKAGE DRIVE – The carb pilot screw adjustment tool uses a steel connecting rod inside the straight outer tube to transfer handle rotation to the 90° head, continuously driving the bit without relying on a flexible spring shaft.
  • DIRECT HANDLE-TO-BIT CONTROL – This motorcycle carb adjusting tool provides a direct mechanical connection between the handle, internal drive rod, and slotted tip, helping you make responsive pilot screw adjustments without repeatedly removing and re-engaging the tool.

What does the fine movement mean in practice?

The lead difference predicts nominal axial motion for a spindle revolution. It is not the same as accuracy, repeatability, or resolution. Accuracy describes closeness to a true position; repeatability describes how consistently a position can be reached; resolution describes the smallest distinguishable or controllable increment. Those properties depend on the complete mechanism and measurement method, including thread quality, backlash, compliance, mounting, load, readout, and operator technique.

Likewise, a manufacturer’s “adjustment sensitivity” or “microns per turn” is a product specification, not proof of absolute positioning accuracy. Compare those figures only with their stated product context, and check whether the maker also publishes accuracy, backlash, or measurement conditions.

Where are differential screws used?

Differential micrometer heads

Newport’s DM-13 is a manufacturer-documented differential micrometer for manual positioning, including optical positioning. Newport specifies 13 mm overall range, a 0.2 mm fine-adjustment range, and 0.07 µm adjustment sensitivity. These are Newport’s stated specifications for that model, not independent test results. See Newport’s DM-13 specifications.

Mitutoyo’s Series 110 is another differential-screw micrometer-head family intended for extra-fine feed and positioning or measurement. Its specific configurations and interfaces should be checked against the intended mount and application. See Mitutoyo Series 110 information.

Manual positioning stages

Parker describes stage drives that include graduated micrometers, digital micrometers, fine screws, and differential screws. Its 9560 differential-screw stage is specified with a coarse range of 0.31 in (8 mm) using a 48-pitch thread and a fine range of 0.078 in (2 mm) using 336 threads per inch. These are published specifications for the 9560, not general values for differential stages. Parker’s drive options also differ in whether a readout is available, so check the exact stage configuration. See Parker’s 9560 product page; review Parker’s stage technical information; and consult Parker’s 2020 catalog.

Standalone adjustment screws

Siskiyou describes a differential version of its precision adjusters with 0.020 in (500 microns) of fine adjustment and 20 microns per turn. Those figures apply to the manufacturer’s stated product, not to differential adjusters generally. See Siskiyou’s differential adjuster information.

How to compare differential-adjustment products

Start with the job’s required motion and interface rather than choosing by the smallest advertised increment alone. Product figures are useful only when the same quantities are being compared.

Product or family Published movement figures What to verify for your setup
Newport DM-13 differential micrometer 13 mm overall range; 0.2 mm fine-adjustment range; 0.07 µm adjustment sensitivity, as stated by Newport Mounting interface, available travel for the intended positioning task, and whether its sensitivity meets the readout and control needs
Mitutoyo Series 110 differential-screw micrometer heads Not stated here; consult the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact configuration Exact model, stem and thread compatibility, travel, spindle behavior, and measurement or positioning requirements
Parker 9560 differential-screw stage 0.31 in (8 mm) coarse range with 48-pitch thread; 0.078 in (2 mm) fine range with 336 threads per inch, per Parker Stage configuration, drive and readout options, mounting, and whether the coarse and fine ranges suit the required travel
Siskiyou differential precision adjuster 0.020 in (500 microns) fine adjustment; 20 microns per turn, per Siskiyou Adjuster model, mounting and thread compatibility, and the required range and spindle behavior

Across these products, check the following before selecting a mechanism:

  • Net movement: Look for movement per turn, graduation, or specified adjustment sensitivity, and note exactly which quantity the manufacturer provides.
  • Travel: Distinguish fine-adjustment range from total or coarse travel. A fine increment does not tell you how far the mechanism can move overall.
  • Spindle behavior: Determine whether the spindle rotates while moving the load, or whether the design provides a non-rotating output where that matters.
  • Mounting compatibility: Match the stem, thread, stage interface, and available clearance to the assembly.
  • Readout: Check whether graduations or a digital readout are included, optional, or unavailable on the chosen configuration.
  • Performance claims: Compare any stated accuracy or repeatability only when the manufacturer provides relevant conditions and definitions.

What a differential screw cannot tell you

The geometry tells you the nominal motion produced by the two thread leads; it does not establish the assembled mechanism’s absolute accuracy or backlash. Nor does a small theoretical movement per turn ensure that a user can set or measure that increment. The rest of the system—bearing and thread quality, load, stiffness, preload, mounting, readout, and environment—matters. Use the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and configuration, and verify compatibility and current availability before purchase; product data and catalog revisions can change.
