A hand-saw sawbench is a low support for holding or resting stock during traditional sawing—not a powered circular-saw bench. One documented design uses a 20-inch height with a 32-inch-long, 7-inch-wide pine top. Those are dimensions for that particular plan, not universal standards; choose a height that suits your body, saw and workpieces.
What a hand-saw bench is for
A sawbench gives you a low, stable place to support stock while making long strokes with a handsaw. Its low working height lets you bring your upper body into the stroke, and the bench can also serve as a seat when you are not sawing. WOOD Magazine describes this use in its Saw Bench Woodworking Plan, published August 5, 2020.
The dimensions and construction below come from Christopher Schwarz’s “Traditional Sawbench” in Workholding Solutions. The plan’s publication date is not established in the excerpt. Treat it as a worked example to adapt—not a one-size-fits-all specification.
Dimensions and materials in the documented plan
The drawing shows a 20-inch-high bench. Schwarz writes, “The 20" height is key to using the bench in conjunction with a Western handsaw.” The plan is therefore a particularly direct fit for full-size Western-style handsaw work; it does not establish a universal height for other saws or users.
#1 Best Overall
| Part | Stock and dimensions in the plan |
|---|---|
| Top | Pine, 1¼ × 7 × 32 inches |
| Legs | Four pine pieces, 2½ × 2½ × 21 inches before trimming |
| Lower braces | Two pine pieces, 1¼ × 2½ × 26¼ inches |
| Top braces | Plywood; dimensions not stated in the cited materials list |
| Optional shelf components | Listed as optional; dimensions not stated here |
The top is a compact 32 inches long, 7 inches wide and 1¼ inches thick. Before choosing stock or cutting, compare the design with the lengths and widths of material you expect to support, your saw’s stroke, your working posture and the space available in your shop.
Construction features and optional details
The plan uses angled legs and braced joinery to make the bench. Follow the drawing and written plan for its specific layout; the details below describe that design rather than a generic build specification.

- Instructions for 62 projects including:
- Legs: Cut the leg ends at 10 degrees and notch the legs so they nest into the top.
- Lower bracing: Tenon the lower braces, then drawbore, wedge and glue the joints as shown.
- Top reinforcement: Reinforce each leg assembly near the top with a ½-inch dowel or equivalent.
- Ripping notch: The top includes a notch for ripping work.
- Holdfast hole: An optional ¾-inch hole can accept a holdfast or hold-down. Position it so the pad bears on the legs, as the plan describes.
- Shelf: The plan includes optional shelf details for added storage.
Besides supporting sawing, this particular design can serve as a clamping surface, step stool or support for mortising work. Those uses are described for the plan; consider the bench’s condition, stability and the specific task before relying on it.
Fit the plan to your work
There is no single height established for every sawbench. The 20-inch example is explicitly tied to a Western handsaw. If you adapt it, check that the bench lets you control the saw through a comfortable stroke and supports the stock where the cut needs it. Also account for the workpiece’s size and how you will keep it from shifting. A full-size Western-style handsaw is the tool category most directly matched to this design; pine is the specified main build material, and a holdfast is optional rather than required.

Keep hand-saw benches distinct from powered saw benches
A simple hand-saw support bench is not a circular-saw bench. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s circular saw bench guidance addresses powered machinery, including precautions such as a riving knife, an adjusted top guard and a push stick near the end of a cut. Those are powered-machine safeguards, not instructions for using a hand-saw bench.
For powered woodworking equipment, follow its manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidance applicable to your machine and location. The HSE also maintains a woodworking safety information index. ISO 19085-9:2024, published in August 2024, concerns safety requirements for circular saw benches intended for continuous production use; it is not a design specification for a hand-saw bench. ISO lists a draft revision as under development in 2026: ISO 19085-9:2024 and ISO/DIS 19085-9.
