A safety door magnetic switch detects whether a machine guard is in position and signals a safety system when it opens. It does not necessarily lock the door. That distinction matters: an interlock monitors the guard, while a guard-locking device physically holds it closed until a defined safe condition is met.
What a safety door magnetic switch does
A typical switch has two parts: a sensor head mounted on the machine and a matched actuator mounted on the movable guard. IDEC describes the arrangement this way: “The sensor head is mounted on the machine/equipment, and the paired actuator is mounted on the door.” When the door closes, the actuator approaches the sensor and its magnetic field operates internal contacts. Opening or removing the guard changes the contact state.
The machine’s safety-related control system uses that signal to prevent hazardous operation or initiate a stop when the guard is not in its required position. Banner describes its SI-MAG as a reed-contact magnetic position switch for monitoring guard movement, opening, or removal. The switch is therefore one part of a protective system, not a standalone guarantee that a machine is safe.
Interlocking is not the same as locking
An interlocking device monitors a movable guard and sends a stop command when it opens. It may not physically keep the guard shut. A guard-locking device, by contrast, retains the guard until a defined condition is met—for example, until hazardous movement has stopped. ABB distinguishes these functions in its explanation of ISO 14119.
A magnetic safety interlock should not be confused with an electromagnetic access-control lock. If an operator could reach a hazard before it stops, monitoring the door alone may not be enough; the risk assessment may call for guard locking or another protective measure.

Why the switch needs a suitable safety system
Magnetic interlocks commonly use reed contacts. IDEC notes that these contacts do not have direct opening action, so the interlock is typically used with a suitable safety relay or controller. That equipment monitors the contact signals and may detect faults such as a welded contact. The necessary architecture depends on the machine’s risk assessment, the selected device, and how the components are integrated.
Do not infer the safety performance of an installation from the switch alone. Output arrangement, controller compatibility, diagnostics, wiring, series connection and the exact device configuration all affect the completed system. A product’s published performance claim is not a determination that a particular machine installation meets its safety requirements.

What magnetic coding does—and does not—prevent
Coding helps a switch distinguish its intended actuator from a simple magnet and can make casual defeat more difficult. The protection varies by design: Banner identifies its SI-MAG as low coded, while ifm contrasts magnetic coding with uniquely coded RFID technology. “Coded” does not mean tamper-proof.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIDEC notes that defeat may still be possible, including by using a replacement actuator or removing the actuator from the guard. The design should account for actuator retention and control of replacement actuators. Multiple magnet-and-reed-switch pairs or differing normally open and normally closed contact behavior do not remove the need for an appropriate controller and application design.
How to select a switch for a machine guard
Start with the machine and the protective function required, then check the complete sensor, actuator and control-system combination. Eaton recommends considering the physical location, actuator orientation and output configuration. The following checks help turn that into a practical specification.

- Useful for industrial situations where a wide-gap, surface mount contact is needed
- Rugged aluminum housing
- Weather-resistant IP54 and sealed for outdoor use
- Iridium-plated to have a high melting point and Vickers hardness, for higher power handling and long life
- Mounting bracket included
- Required function: Decide whether the application needs guard monitoring alone or guard locking until a safe condition is reached.
- Actuator and mounting: Confirm the matched actuator, mounting direction, alignment tolerance, available space and measures that prevent unintended removal. Check that the arrangement suits how the guard moves.
- Coding and defeat measures: Identify the coding level and consider realistic bypass or actuator-removal risks for the installation.
- Outputs and controls: Verify output type and quantity, compatibility with the safety relay or controller, fault diagnostics and the effects of series connection.
- Environment: Check enclosure protection, temperature limits, cleaning exposure and other conditions at the mounting location.
- Safety data and documents: Review published safety data for the exact model and configuration, along with the current manufacturer manual and datasheet.
Manufacturer examples show why the exact model matters. Omron describes its CM family as coded magnetic non-contact switches for door monitoring, with options including stainless-steel housings and versions with or without a dedicated controller. Those options should be checked against the specific CM model rather than assumed to apply to every unit in the family.
For the D40A-2, Omron’s product page lists IP66/67 enclosure protection, a manufacturer claim of Category 4/PLe, up to 30 connected devices, and an operating range of −25°C to +70°C. These are product-specific published claims, not general specifications for magnetic safety switches or proof that a system built around the switch achieves that performance. Confirm the current documentation for the exact configuration before specifying or replacing it.

Standards and installation context
Manufacturer materials reference ISO 14119 for interlocking devices associated with guards, and ISO 13849 and IEC 62061 for machinery safety-related control systems. ABB discusses EN ISO 14119 in a European context. The applicable standard edition and local adoption depend on the machine’s geography and application. A product-page reference to a standard does not establish that a proposed machine installation complies; that requires checking the applicable requirements and the completed design.
