Grow a sago palm in a bright indoor spot with filtered light, a well-drained growing medium, and careful watering. Despite its name and palm-like, feathery foliage, Cycas revoluta is a cycad—not a true palm. It grows very slowly, and every part should be kept away from pets and children because ingestion can be dangerous.
What a sago palm is
Sago palm, also called Japanese sago palm or king sago palm, is Cycas revoluta. North Carolina Extension notes, “While it has a distinct palm-like appearance, it is not a true palm.” Its evergreen leaves have a glossy, pinnate appearance, with pointed tips and leaflets that roll downward along the margins. The foliage may look feathery, but the plant is neither a fern nor a true palm. North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox
Where to place it indoors
Choose bright, filtered light
Set the plant near a bright window where it receives filtered light rather than harsh direct sun. North Carolina Extension recommends 4–6 hours of filtered sunlight per day indoors and cautions that intense sunlight can damage the foliage. A dim corner is not a good substitute for bright light. Outdoor and glasshouse placement
For cultivation under glass, the Royal Horticultural Society recommends full light with shade from hot sun. That advice concerns glasshouse growing; indoors, use the more directly applicable filtered-light guidance above. Outdoors, protect the plant from frost and consider the climate where it will grow. The RHS describes it as suitable for frost-free outdoor growing in mild coastal parts of the UK. Royal Horticultural Society

Soil and watering
Prioritize drainage
Use a growing medium that drains freely. Poor drainage and overwatering can harm a sago palm; North Carolina Extension describes established plants as drought tolerant, but that is not a reason to leave a newly potted or indoor plant without attention. For glasshouse cultivation, the RHS specifies peat-free, loam-based compost with added leaf mould and grit. This is a context-specific example, not a requirement to buy a particular brand or mix for every indoor plant. North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox and Royal Horticultural Society
Water according to conditions, not a calendar
Neither consulted source establishes a universal indoor watering interval. The RHS advises moderate watering during the growing season and sparing watering at other times for glasshouse plants. At home, avoid a rigid weekly schedule: account for how quickly your particular medium dries, and do not keep it waterlogged. Royal Horticultural Society

Growth and routine maintenance
Expect slow growth
Sago palms are very slow-growing. North Carolina Extension says the plant may take 50 or more years to reach 10 feet; this is a long-term growth estimate, not a prediction that a houseplant will reach that height indoors. The same source describes cycads as an ancient plant family dating back about 200 million years; that figure refers to the family, not to this species or an individual sago palm. North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox
Prune only when needed
Routine pruning is unnecessary. If fronds die, they can be removed; the RHS says no pruning is required, while North Carolina Extension identifies removal of dead fronds as an option. Wear gloves when handling the plant, as the RHS warns that it can irritate skin. North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox and Royal Horticultural Society

Propagation
The plant can be propagated from seed or from suckers that grow at its base. The cited care sources do not provide a step-by-step propagation method, so treat these as possible routes rather than a complete propagation procedure. North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox
Temperature and frost
Frost can damage the foliage. North Carolina Extension reports that the plant will not survive temperatures below 15°F; this is a stated survival threshold, not a recommended growing temperature. The plant is suited to warm conditions, and outdoor placement should account for local cold and frost exposure rather than treating a hardiness-zone listing as an indoor temperature target. Toxicity: keep it away from pets and children
Sago palm is toxic if eaten. The ASPCA lists it as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses; the RHS also warns that it is harmful if eaten and toxic to dogs and cats. Place it where children and animals cannot reach it, avoid ingesting any part, and use gloves and protective equipment when handling it. ASPCA and Royal Horticultural Society
If a pet may have eaten any part of the plant, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control promptly. ASPCA
