Water Softener Salt Pellets vs. Crystals: How to Choose

Pellets and solar crystals both supply sodium chloride for water softeners, but compatibility, purity, and insoluble residue matter more than shape alone.

Neither pellets nor crystals are the right choice for every water softener. Use the salt form allowed by your exact model, then compare the bag’s intended use and purity. Pellets are compressed salt; solar crystals are formed by evaporating salt water. Differences in insoluble material and tank design can affect residue and cleaning, but no universal winner has been established.

What is the difference between pellets and crystals?

Both are sodium chloride used to make brine for regenerating an ion-exchange water softener. Pellets are compressed salt particles, while solar salt crystals form as salt water evaporates. They differ in physical form and may differ in the amount of water-insoluble material; they are not different softening technologies.

For example, Cargill lists its Diamond Crystal Bright & Soft pellets at 99.8% sodium chloride and its Solar Naturals crystals at 99.6%. Those are product-specific figures shown on Cargill’s pages, with no year stated there; they do not describe all pellets or crystals. Check Cargill’s product listings.

Which type should you use?

Start with the owner’s manual for your exact softener model. Brand guidance varies, and the appliance’s compatibility instructions take priority over a general preference for one shape. Use salt labeled for water softeners, not ordinary table salt or an unapproved substitute. Cargill’s guidance says cabinet-style, self-contained softeners usually need salt low in water-insoluble matter, while separate side-by-side brine tanks allow more flexibility.

Each bag has an easy-tear opening and sturdy handle for simpler lifting and pouring, made by Morton, the salt experts since 1848.

Check the bag and purity claim

Read the product label for salt type, intended use, and purity. GE recommends clean water-softening salt that is at least 99.5% pure; Whirlpool Water Solutions recommends salt at least 99% pure with less than 1% contaminants in its 2026 guidance. These are the respective companies’ recommendations, not a universal industry standard. Follow your model’s manual if it sets a different requirement. See GE’s salt guidance and Whirlpool Water Solutions’ guide.

Consider tank design and how much salt you use

Cargill says solar salt contains somewhat more water-insoluble matter than evaporated pellets. In a system that uses salt heavily, insoluble material can build up faster and mean more frequent tank cleaning. This is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for every salt product or installation. It may matter more in a cabinet-style unit that is harder to clean than in a separate brine tank.

Do not assume shapes can be mixed

Rheem advises users of its softener systems not to mix pellet and crystal shapes because doing so can increase the risk of bridging or blockage. That advice is specific to its model family; follow your own appliance’s instructions rather than applying it automatically to every softener. See Rheem’s softener information.

What are bridging and mushing?

A salt bridge is a hardened crust or mass that forms above a hollow space in the brine tank; mushing is a compacted mass of salt near the bottom. Either can interfere with brine flow and disrupt regeneration. Cargill says a bridge or mush may need to be broken up manually or addressed by a dealer.

Check your model’s manual before trying to clear a blockage. GE describes using a broom handle to check for a bridge and warns against banging on the brine tank because it could crack. These are GE’s instructions, not a procedure to assume is safe for every tank. Refer to GE’s guidance or the instructions for your own model.

How should you maintain the salt level?

Use the schedule and fill level specified by your softener’s manual; maintenance directions are not identical across brands. For example, GE says to check salt storage a few weeks after installation and weekly thereafter until you establish a refill routine, and to refill when the tank is one-quarter to one-half full. Rheem gives a separate salt-level scale and a recommendation of at least 12 inches for its systems. Neither brand’s quantities should be treated as universal.

Can you use potassium chloride or rock salt?

Potassium chloride is a different choice from salt shape

Potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are different regeneration salts; choosing between pellets and crystals does not answer whether KCl is compatible. GE allows KCl as an alternative for its softeners, while Whirlpool says special programming is required on its systems. Confirm compatibility and any settings in the exact model’s instructions before switching. GE’s guidance and Whirlpool Water Solutions’ guide apply to their respective products.

Do not substitute ice-melting rock salt without approval

Rock salt sold for melting ice is not a safe default for a brine tank. RainSoft cautions that it is typically high in impurities, which may clog the brine system, and GE also warns against using rock salt in its softeners. Use it only if the manufacturer of your specific unit explicitly approves it. RainSoft’s salt guidance and GE’s guidance explain their cautions.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Confirm compatibility: Check whether your exact model permits pellets, crystals, or both.
  2. Choose the right product: Select salt labeled for water softeners and check its purity and insoluble-material claims.
  3. Account for your tank: If the unit is cabinet-style or uses salt heavily, low-insoluble salt may reduce residue-related cleaning needs, according to Cargill’s guidance.
  4. Maintain it as directed: Watch for bridging or mushing and follow the model’s procedure for checking or clearing it.
  5. Compare local cost and availability last: Confirm compatibility first. Cargill notes that some crystal products are available only in limited areas; local availability varies. See its product listings.
