If your Ruud Achiever 90 Plus furnace is not heating, start with thermostat and power checks, then record the diagnostic light or message and the furnace’s startup sequence. Use the fault chart for the exact model—not a code list assumed to fit every Achiever 90 Plus. Stop and call a qualified HVAC technician for recurring faults or anything involving gas, venting, combustion, safety controls, or internal electrical work.
Identify the exact furnace before interpreting a fault
“Achiever 90 Plus” is a series name, not enough to identify the diagnostic chart or replacement parts for a particular furnace. The official service guide available for this series is specifically for the Ruud Achiever Series 90 Plus with Dual Com, model family RGRK. Its procedures and diagnostic details should not be assumed to apply to every furnace sold under a similar name.
Find the equipment nameplate and record the complete model and serial numbers. Consult the service or installation manual matching that information. If the manual is unavailable, ask a qualified HVAC technician or the manufacturer for the correct document rather than relying on a generic “Ruud Achiever 90 Plus error codes” list.
Safe checks you can make without opening the furnace
- Check the call for heat. Confirm the thermostat is set to Heat, the set temperature is above the room temperature, and the thermostat has power. If its batteries are replaceable, check them according to the thermostat instructions.
- Check the furnace’s external power supply. Look for an obviously switched-off furnace service switch or a tripped breaker. Do not remove furnace panels or work inside energized equipment. If a breaker trips again after being reset, leave it off and call for service.
- Read the visible diagnostic indication. Note the light pattern or displayed message and any explanation printed on the furnace door label. Do not treat a pattern as a definitive diagnosis unless it matches the chart for your exact model.
- Observe the startup sequence from outside the cabinet. Note whether the inducer starts, ignition is attempted, burners light, and the circulating blower starts—and when the furnace stops. Record the sequence rather than touching internal parts.
Give the technician the model and serial numbers, the diagnostic indication, and your observations. This can help narrow the fault without risking damage or defeating a safety function.

- WHOLE HOUSE REPLACEMENT: 17.5x21x5 air filters for your furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump enhance HVAC system efficiency and support a healthy lifestyle (actual size: 17.13" x 20.63" x 4.38")
- MERV 8 PERFORMANCE: Protect your home or business from pollen, lint, mold, and more with MERV 8 synthetic media (comparable with MPR 700 & FPR 5) that captures 90% of dust without restricting air flow
- LONG-LASTING FILTRATION: Electrostatically charged media (made in the USA) with 8 pleats per foot traps more microscopic particles and lasts 3x longer than fiberglass models (replace every 180 days for optimal performance)
- SUPERIOR CONSTRUCTION: Easy installation beverage board (recyclable) frames with dual wire backing outperform flimsy cardboard designs by improving durability, preventing warping, and resisting extreme temperatures
- COMPATIBLE MODELS: Rheem / Ruud Filter Part Numbers (PD540010, PD540016), Protech (540010, 540016), Housing Part Numbers (RXHF-E17AM10, RXHF-E17AM13)
What the RGRK Dual Com guide documents
For its stated RGRK Dual Com scope, the Ruud service guide documents an integrated control board with diagnostics, pressure switches, direct-spark ignition, flame-sense current diagnostics, and a remote sensor. These features help explain why an observed failure may involve more than a thermostat or a single replaceable component; they do not establish a universal error-code table for all Achiever 90 Plus furnaces. See the Ruud Achiever Series 90 Plus with Dual Com service literature and verify that it matches the unit’s nameplate.
When to stop troubleshooting and call an HVAC technician
- The fault recurs, or the furnace repeatedly starts and stops.
- The diagnostic indication involves a pressure switch, limit control, ignition, flame sensing, or internal wiring.
- You suspect a gas, venting, or combustion problem.
- A breaker trips again, or resolving the issue would require opening the furnace or handling internal electrical components.
Never bypass a pressure switch, limit, flame safeguard, or other safety control. Do not attempt gas, combustion, or internal electrical repairs unless you are appropriately qualified. Safety controls are not troubleshooting obstacles; defeating them can expose occupants to serious hazards or damage the furnace.

Choose parts only after diagnosis and compatibility checks
A flame sensor is a plausible replacement only when a qualified diagnosis supports that repair. The guide’s documentation of flame-sense diagnostics does not establish a single sensor part number for every Achiever 90 Plus. Before buying any part, confirm compatibility against the complete furnace model and serial and the manufacturer’s parts documentation.
Ask whether the diagnosis supports replacement, cleaning, or another repair; whether the part is documented for the exact furnace; and whether warranty coverage may apply. A similar series name alone does not prove that a part fits. The same checks matter for OEM and third-party parts: use compatibility documentation for the specific unit rather than appearance or a broad product listing.

Check the furnace-specific warranty terms
The Rheem/Ruud warranty overview lists furnace families including RGRA, RGRK, RGRL, and RGTA, and describes conditions that can affect parts coverage. Eligibility may depend on residential use, original ownership and installation location, and registration within the stated period for conditional coverage. The overview cannot establish whether a particular older furnace or repair is covered. Check the warranty supplied with the unit and the manufacturer’s current written terms before authorizing a parts purchase. Rheem/Ruud warranty information
