If your Ruud furnace is not heating, check the thermostat, power, and accessible airflow first. If the furnace displays a blinking light or alarm, identify the exact model and use its own manual or diagnostic label: Ruud fault codes vary by control and furnace family. Leave gas, combustion, internal electrical tests, and safety-switch faults to a qualified HVAC technician.
Start with checks you can make safely
Confirm the thermostat is calling for heat
- Set the thermostat to Heat and raise the target temperature above the current room temperature.
- Check that the fan is set to a normal heating mode rather than a setting that may prevent a standard heat call.
- Confirm that the home has power and that the furnace service switch and circuit breaker are on. Do not remove an access panel or defeat a safety interlock to check the furnace.
Check accessible airflow
Look at the filter and accessible supply registers. A visibly dirty filter or blocked or closed registers can restrict airflow. If replacing the filter, match the dimensions and type of the installed filter; there is no universal size for Ruud furnaces. Ruud’s 801S/P manual includes a dirty filter, dampers, and closed registers in its troubleshooting flow for an open or cycling limit circuit: Ruud/Rheem 801S/P installation and operation manual.
Find the right Ruud fault code
Note the number and pattern of indicator flashes, any thermostat or EcoNet alarm text, the furnace model number, and when the fault occurs. Match that information to the label on the unit or documentation for that exact model and control board. Do not rely on a code chart for a different Ruud furnace.
For example, the Rheem technical FAQ describes one control family in which one blink indicates a soft lockout after ignition or flame failures; two indicate an open negative-pressure-switch circuit; three indicate an open limit circuit; four indicate a pressure switch remaining closed; and five indicate a twinning fault. Those definitions are specific to the controls covered by that FAQ, not a universal Ruud code chart: Rheem Gas Furnace Technical FAQ.

What common symptoms may mean
The furnace will not ignite
A furnace may stop its ignition sequence if it cannot establish required operating conditions or sense a flame. For the 801S/P equipment covered by its manual, the sequence includes an inducer pre-purge and an ignition trial; repeated failed trials can result in lockout. The sequence and timing are model-specific, and an ignition symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
The furnace starts, then shuts off
A flame-sensing fault is one possibility, but it is not proof that the flame sensor needs replacement. For equipment covered by the Rheem technical FAQ, possible causes also include grounding or electrical phasing problems, gas pressure, and drain-switch conditions. These require diagnosis rather than replacing a part based on the symptom alone.

A pressure-switch fault appears
The manufacturer FAQ lists an obstructed vent or pressure-switch tube port and induced-draft blower problems among possible causes for the equipment it covers. Testing the pressure switch involves internal equipment and diagnostic instruments, so leave it to a technician.
A limit or rollout fault appears
Restricted airflow can contribute to an open high-limit circuit, while excessive gas pressure is another possible cause listed in the manufacturer FAQ. A rollout condition can involve combustion air, a blocked flue or heat exchanger, or a damaged heat exchanger. Do not bypass a limit, pressure, or rollout switch, or repeatedly reset a rollout switch; stop using the furnace and arrange qualified service.

When to stop and call a technician
The 801S/P manual warns: “DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE SERVICING. SERVICE MUST BE BY A TRAINED, QUALIFIED SERVICE TECHNICIAN.” It also says to verify gas-valve inlet and outlet pressure—a technician diagnostic, not a homeowner adjustment. Do not open gas fittings, adjust gas pressure, probe energized components, or attempt internal wiring checks.
- Call a qualified HVAC technician for rollout faults, combustion concerns, gas-pressure issues, internal electrical diagnosis, or repeated lockouts.
- If the furnace still will not heat after the thermostat, power, and accessible airflow checks, use the model-specific manual and arrange service rather than guessing at a repair part.
- If you smell gas, leave the area and contact the local gas utility or emergency services from a safe location, following local utility guidance.
Diagnostics and alarms depend on the model
Some Ruud product features are limited to named models. Ruud describes the RGLE and RGPE Ultra Series Super Quiet 80 two-stage communicating gas furnaces as having “Over 28 on-board diagnostics & fault history codes.” That feature count applies to those models, not every Ruud furnace: Ruud RGLE/RGPE Ultra Series 80% AFUE product page.
