The failure could be in the LED source, the driver, or another part of the assembly, so a dark bulb does not prove every LED is dead. But recovery depends on the bulb’s construction, and a working LED is not automatically compatible with a new circuit. Opening a mains-powered bulb is not a safe household task; if you are not trained in electronics repair, leave it closed and use a local e-waste collection route.
Why a bulb can fail while some LEDs still work
An LED bulb is an assembly, not just a group of light-emitting components. Its driver regulates power to the LED string, and the LED source and other parts can fail independently. A bulb that no longer lights may therefore contain usable LEDs, but appearance alone cannot confirm that they work.
A 2022 study by Moheddine Wehbie and Vincent Semetey reported that 58.7% of the modules they studied were still operating and in good condition. That is a finding about the study’s module sample—not a general salvage rate for household bulbs or all discarded LEDs. The authors also identify complex dismantling and component diversity as barriers to repair.
What can be recovered depends on the board
A teardown reported by Tom Nardi at Hackaday describes recovering both complete LED panels and individual surface-mount device (SMD) LEDs. Designs vary, so these are possible approaches, not a universal procedure.

Neither approach establishes that a recovered part will be reliable in a new circuit. A teardown of one design cannot serve as a tested dismantling guide for every bulb.
Recovered LEDs need a compatible drive circuit
Do not connect a salvaged LED to a random power supply or assume the original driver will suit a different arrangement. The Electronics Sector Skills Council of India’s LED Light Repair Technician Facilitator Guide distinguishes constant-current and constant-voltage drivers and identifies selection factors including LED forward current, power consumption, driver output-voltage range, luminaire specifications, physical dimensions, and operating environment.

In practical terms, a repairer needs to establish the LED’s electrical requirements and choose a drive arrangement that matches them. A component that lights briefly under unsuitable conditions is not proof of a sound or safe installation. Training material is not a substitute for a product-specific circuit diagram or safety procedure.
Safety comes before salvage
Do not open a mains-powered bulb unless you have relevant electronics repair training and appropriate equipment. Unscrewing a bulb or disconnecting it from the socket does not establish that its driver circuitry is safe to handle. The available sources do not provide one safe, product-independent dismantling procedure or a live-testing method for every bulb.

Component recovery can involve dismantling complex assemblies and working with soldering or hot-air tools. Signify’s India e-waste guidance warns that opening e-waste to retrieve components in an unscientific manner can create health and environmental risks. Buying rework equipment does not make opening a mains-powered bulb safe for an untrained person.

If you cannot verify a component’s condition and electrical requirements, or the assembly is not suitable for repair, use a designated or registered e-waste collection route. Signify’s guidance applies to India and points consumers there to registered recyclers, producers, or its collection network. Philips Hue’s US guidance recommends designated recycling points and notes that disposal rules vary by jurisdiction. Check local rules rather than assuming one country’s instructions apply everywhere.

Philips Hue also notes that standard LED bulbs do not contain mercury like CFLs, while still containing circuit boards and other materials. That is not a reason to put every LED bulb in ordinary household waste; follow the collection and disposal rules where you live.
