Here, “short scraps” means leftover fabric pieces. You can make them useful by joining them into larger patchwork, stabilizing them on a fabric foundation, or using them as small appliqué details. If you mean scraps of another material, these fabric techniques do not apply.
Choose a method for the scraps you have
Start with the scraps’ size and shape, then consider whether they need support, how regular you want the finished design to look, and what you plan to make. These are technique options, not methods that have been compared in a controlled performance test.

The Quilters’ Guild describes scrap fabric as suitable for patchwork blocks, string quilts, log cabin blocks, and appliqué, and notes that scrap quilts can be made in different styles and levels of precision: The Quilters’ Guild.
Stabilize difficult scraps with a fabric foundation
For narrow or small pieces that are hard to handle, sew them onto a foundation fabric. It gives the work support and a defined block boundary to build toward. Folk Fibers’ guide recommends a neutral foundation in its example so it is less likely to show through; that is project advice, not a universal requirement. The guide also describes making a block without a backing, but notes that this takes more care: Folk Fibers: Piece Block – Piecing a Scrap Quilt.

- Cut or choose a foundation to the size you want for the finished block.
- Arrange scraps on the foundation, using the block boundary as a guide.
- Sew the pieces together onto the foundation, adding scraps until the area is covered.
- Trim the block to its intended shape and size before joining it to other blocks or using it in a project.
Turn strips and tiny pieces into larger patches
Piece strips into a larger design
String piecing lets you combine leftover strips into a larger patchwork area. For a more structured block, log cabin piecing builds outward from a central square with strips. Both approaches make the joined fabric itself the useful material for the next stage.
Make a small piece the decoration
When a scrap is too small to contribute much area, use it as an appliqué shape or detail on a larger background. Alternatively, join several tiny pieces into a larger patch and use that patch as a base for embellishment or another decorative accent. Prepare scraps and tools without overcomplicating the project
Sort fabric by size if that makes it easier to find pieces that suit a block or project. Folk Fibers describes sorting as one practical preparation approach and recommends saving pieces larger than a postage stamp in its own method. Its preference for natural fibers is personal guidance, not a general rule for scrap quilting: Folk Fibers: Prepare Fabric – Piecing a Scrap Quilt.
A ruler, small rotary cutter, and rotating cutting mat can help trim and square small pieces. Janome includes them in the supply list for its tiny scrappy quilt project, but they are optional tools, not requirements for every technique: Janome: Tiny Scrappy Quilt.
