Store chisels with each cutting edge covered and separated from other tools. For transport or compact storage, use a slotted roll; for a fixed workshop collection, choose a fitted drawer insert or case; and for tools used often, consider a rack that keeps them accessible without letting their edges collide.
What makes chisel storage safe?
A loose chisel can expose its edge to a hand or let the blade strike another tool. Put a protective cap over each cutting edge when the chisel is not in use, and store tools so they remain separated. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety recommends placing chisels in a storage roll with an individual slot for each tool, then keeping the roll in a drawer or tray: CCOHS, “Hand Tools – Wood Chisels”.
Choose storage to match how you use the chisels

How to size a drawer insert
Measure the tools and drawer before cutting supports. WOOD Magazine’s article, updated April 3, 2024, describes sizing separate supports for the handles and blades: Safe storage for chisels.
- Measure handle diameters. Add the handle diameters and allow for the spaces needed between tools in the layout.
- Measure the longest chisel flat. Include the gaps beneath the ferrule and blade, and note the blade length.
- Make separate supports. Size the ferrule and blade supports to the measurements, then check that the completed layout fits the drawer.
The ten-chisel arrangement in the article is an example; use your own set and drawer dimensions rather than copying it as a standard.

Check a compact holder’s dimensions before buying
BeaverCraft describes its TH10 Dark holder as a compact plywood holder for woodcarving knives, small gouges, chisels, and other tools that fit. The manufacturer lists dimensions of 250 mm wide, 220 mm high, and 105 mm deep, with a rack height of 95 mm and a hole diameter of 35 mm; it says foam paddles at the bottom protect blades. These are the manufacturer’s specifications and claims, not independent test results. Check the current TH10 listing and compare its openings and dimensions with each tool—those specifications do not establish fit for every bench chisel.
