Coin-leaf and trailing Peperomias offer other rounded looks, while the sweetheart Hoya has heart-shaped leaves rather than round ones. “Round-leaf” describes appearance, not a botanical group, so check the plant’s botanical label before choosing.
Which houseplants have round leaves?
These plants offer the closest matches, with an important distinction: some have circular leaves, some have small rounded foliage, and one is included as a heart-shaped alternative. The Royal Horticultural Society notes that both Pilea and Peperomia include plants with different growth habits or foliage, so a genus name alone does not guarantee round leaves.
| Plant | Leaf shape | Growth habit | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides) | Nearly circular, disc-like | Upright | The clearest choice for a truly round leaf; its stalk attaches near the center of the leaf. |
| Coin-leaf Peperomia (Peperomia polybotrya) | Rounded to oval | Not stated in the available species-level source. | Check the botanical label and plant profile; avoid assuming care details from the common name. |
| String of turtles (Peperomia prostrata) | Small, rounded leaves with turtle-shell-like variegation | Trailing | A compact-leaved option with a different look from the larger, coin-shaped Pilea leaves. |
| Round-leaf Peperomia (Peperomia rotundifolia) | Round | Trailing | Confirm the identification against the botanical name on the label. |
| Sweetheart plant (Hoya kerrii) | Heart-shaped, not truly round | Vining when grown from a viable node | A single-leaf cutting may have no node and may never develop into a vine. |
1. Chinese money plant
Pilea peperomioides is the strongest match if “round” means a nearly circular leaf. The petiole attaches close to the leaf’s center, creating a disc or lily-pad appearance. Penn State Extension reports a typical size of 8–12 inches tall and wide (2025). The plant is native to shady, cool mountain areas of Yunnan in southern China and is commonly grown as an ornamental houseplant.
2. Coin-leaf Peperomia
Peperomia polybotrya is a plausible choice for rounded or oval foliage. Because care can vary among Peperomia species, identify the plant by its botanical name and use guidance for that species rather than relying on “coin-leaf” alone.

3. String of turtles
Peperomia prostrata has small rounded leaves marked with turtle-shell-like variegation. Its trailing habit makes it visually distinct from upright plants such as Pilea.
4. Round-leaf Peperomia
Peperomia rotundifolia is identified by the common name “round-leaf Peperomia” and has a trailing form. Since common names are not definitive identifiers, check that the label gives this botanical name.

5. Sweetheart plant
Hoya kerrii is a rounded-leaf alternative only in a broad sense: its foliage is heart-shaped. Before buying a single-leaf cutting, check whether it includes a node. A leaf without one may remain a leaf rather than growing into a vine.
How to tell a Chinese money plant from Peperomia
Look at where the leaf stalk meets the blade. In Pilea peperomioides, it attaches near the center of the nearly circular leaf. Peperomias vary in leaf shape and texture, and some may be mistaken for the Chinese money plant. When exact identification matters, rely on the botanical name on the label rather than overall roundness.

How to care for a Chinese money plant
Light and watering
Place Pilea in bright, indirect light rather than direct sun. Water when the top 2 cm (about 1 inch) of compost has dried, and do not leave the pot standing in water. Persistent overwatering can harm the plant.
Compost and temperature
Use free-draining, peat-free houseplant compost. Keep the plant warm and away from chilly draughts; avoid treating general advice as a precise temperature target for every plant.

Choosing and propagating a plant
When buying Pilea, look for healthy new growth and avoid plants with withering, yellow or brown leaves, visible insect damage, or signs of disease. Protect it from cold on the way home. Pilea can produce offsets around its base; the RHS also describes propagation from leaf cuttings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to care for Peperomia
Peperomias generally do well in bright, indirect light. Let the top few centimetres of compost dry before watering; persistently damp growing conditions can lead to root rot. Some Peperomias prefer higher humidity, but the genus guide says they can adapt to average homes. Because the genus includes diverse forms, check species-specific needs when you know the plant’s exact name.
