Rubber vs. Urethane Bandsaw Tires: Which Should You Choose?

Urethane is often easier to install, while rubber may suit sizes or configurations urethane does not cover. Verify the exact saw, wheel dimensions, and tire instructions before buying.

For many routine replacements, urethane is the more convenient choice because it commonly stretches onto the wheel without adhesive. Rubber remains a sound option when its size or profile better matches the saw, or when urethane is unavailable for that setup. Neither material is universally best: the available comparisons are largely supplier claims, not controlled tests.

How rubber and urethane bandsaw tires differ

Decision Rubber Urethane
Installation Often bonded with adhesive. The wheel surface needs preparation, and the adhesive and method depend on the product. Commonly fitted as a stretch-on tire without adhesive. Some suppliers recommend warming or soaking the tire to make it more flexible.
Aging and wear Suppliers describe rubber as susceptible to dry rot, hardening, or cracking with age. Suppliers claim better resistance to dry rot, hardening, or wear. No independent, quantified comparison establishes a lifespan advantage.
Availability Some vendors list rubber in sizes beyond their urethane ranges; York Saw/Luxite also says rubber can be cut to width. Ranges vary by vendor and product. Confirm that the specific tire is offered for your wheel and saw.
Fit considerations Check the exact model, wheel dimensions, tire width, and profile; follow the bonding instructions. Check the same details. Supplier sizing guidance conflicts, so follow the instructions for the specific tire rather than a generic sizing rule.

The listed ranges illustrate variation, not universal availability: Carter lists rubber tires for 6-to-42-inch sizes and its ULTRA BLUE urethane tires for 10-to-20-inch sizes (Carter Products). York Saw/Luxite lists rubber up to 38 inches and urethane up to 20 inches, and offers rubber cut to width (York Saw/Luxite). Check current product listings before ordering.

Which material is better for your saw?

Choose urethane when convenient installation is the priority

Stretch-on urethane tires commonly avoid the adhesive step used with rubber. Suppliers also claim that urethane better resists age-related deterioration, but the available evidence does not quantify how many years longer it lasts or demonstrate a comparative cut-accuracy benefit.

Choose rubber when the fit or configuration calls for it

Rubber may be the practical replacement when the required diameter, width, or profile is not offered in urethane. Some vendors offer rubber in broader size ranges, but those ranges are specific to their catalogs. Confirm the actual dimensions and machine compatibility rather than assuming a nominal wheel size is enough.

How to confirm the right replacement

  1. Identify the exact saw model. Use the model information to check the tire maker’s compatibility listing. For example, Grizzly’s T23071 urethane pair lists compatibility with specified 17-inch models, including G0513 variants and G0640X (Grizzly).
  2. Check the wheel and tire dimensions. Verify wheel diameter, tire width, and profile against the product listing. Do not infer fit from the saw’s advertised size alone.
  3. Check the wheel configuration. Grooves or other wheel details can affect compatibility. Lee Valley notes that a particular Delta 20-inch grooved-wheel setup needs a groove filler when using non-grooved replacement tires with blades 1/4 inch wide or narrower (Lee Valley).
  4. Follow the chosen tire’s sizing and installation directions. Supplier sizing advice differs, including on whether the replacement tire should match or be smaller than the wheel. Use the instructions for the exact product you are buying.
  5. Confirm any model-specific question with the supplier. A product listing may provide dimensions or a wheel range without naming every compatible saw. Texas Belting, for example, lists a 12-inch set with dimensions and a wheel-range specification and invites model-specific compatibility checks (Texas Belting).

Installation: adhesive for rubber, stretch fit for urethane

Rubber

Rubber tires are commonly glued in place, so surface preparation and bonding matter. Carter’s instructions advise sanding the bonding surface and cleaning it with an alcohol-based cleaner; follow the instructions supplied with the specific tire and adhesive (Carter rubber tire installation instructions).

Urethane

Urethane tires are commonly stretched over the wheel without adhesive. Some supplier guidance recommends soaking a tire in warm or hot water to make fitting easier. The appropriate temperature and installation sequence are product-specific; use the tire maker’s directions rather than treating one supplier’s method as universal.

When to inspect or replace a tire

Cracking, brittleness, hardening, or visible wear are reasons to inspect a tire, particularly if tracking or operation has deteriorated. A tire may be part of the problem, but tracking trouble can have other causes; do not assume a replacement tire alone will correct it.

In an older woodworking reference, Peter Perez, identified as Carter Products’ president, suggested pressing a fingernail into the tire: a good tire should rebound without a visible mark, while an impression is a reason to replace it. This is an attributed rule of thumb, not a current formal standard.

What the comparisons can—and cannot—establish

Supplier pages support practical distinctions in installation, catalog availability, and claimed resistance to aging. They do not establish a controlled, independent comparison of lifespan, failure rates, or cutting accuracy. Treat durability statements as vendor claims, and base the purchase on fit, installation preference, and the condition of the tire you are replacing.
