What happened in the Roleystone house fire
PerthNow reporter Caitlin Vinci reported on 10 April 2025 that the fire occurred on the afternoon of 16 February at the Emmanuels’ home on Peet Road in Roleystone, Western Australia. Judy, then reported as 73, said she and Peter, 76, were returning from Bunnings after buying a showerhead when a friend called to tell them about the fire.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services told PerthNow the house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived and that it took two hours to contain the blaze. The report says the fire started inside Judy’s 13-year-old car, but does not establish what caused it to ignite. PerthNow’s report is the source for the incident details.
What the family lost
The fire destroyed the house and car, and the couple lost their possessions and their dog, Pippa. Judy said firefighters got the animals out, but Pippa, their oldest dog, went back inside. Judy described trying to look for her and stopping when smoke was very thick near the floor. The report does not give further details about Pippa’s death.

The loss was especially profound because the property had been home for decades. “We built the place, we had five children go through it. Everything they are attached to is just gone,” Judy told PerthNow. She also said, “I don’t sleep at night just thinking about different things which are gone that I can’t replace.”
Judy said she wanted to rebuild on the same property
Judy told PerthNow, “But I want to build a new place here, it’s our home.” That was her stated hope, not confirmation that the couple have rebuilt or that construction is underway. The report said Judy and Peter visited the former property daily.

At the time of the report, Judy was staying at a daughter’s house and Peter with a son. Neighbour Rebecca Smulders, who started a GoFundMe to help the couple get their life back on track, described them as long-time Roleystone residents who shared produce from their garden: “Peter and Judy have lived in Roleystone for years, sharing the beautiful produce grown in their garden.” PerthNow did not establish whether the fundraiser is still active.

The Emmanuels had insurance for their home and car, but not contents insurance, according to PerthNow. The report does not specify policy terms, coverage limits, or how any claims were resolved, so it does not establish what costs the couple’s insurance would cover.
