No—switch off power to the HVAC equipment before disconnecting or handling thermostat wires. Set the thermostat to Off if you like, but that setting does not disconnect power to the furnace or other heating equipment. Turn off the breaker or equipment switch serving the system, then verify power is off before you start.
Why the thermostat’s Off setting is not enough
The thermostat controls when heating or cooling is requested; it does not necessarily cut electrical power to the furnace. Honeywell Home makes this distinction explicitly in its C-wire guidance. Manufacturer instructions advise switching off system power before connecting or disconnecting wires, to reduce the risk of injury or equipment damage. See Google Nest’s power-off instructions and Honeywell Home’s installation instructions.
How to shut off and verify HVAC power
- Identify the equipment’s switch or breaker. Turn off the circuit or switch that serves the HVAC equipment. Some systems have separate heating and cooling breakers, so turn off all relevant circuits before exposing the wiring. If you cannot identify them confidently, stop and ask an HVAC professional or electrician.
- Verify that the system does not respond. Follow the replacement thermostat’s instructions. Google Nest recommends changing the thermostat temperature to test whether the system responds; Honeywell likewise advises calling for heat or cooling and confirming the system does not start. A battery-powered thermostat display may stay lit after equipment power is off, so a lit screen by itself is not proof that the HVAC circuit is still energized.
- Document the existing wiring before disconnecting it. Take a clear photo and label each wire. Then follow the instructions for the exact replacement thermostat: wire colors and terminal labels are not a reliable substitute for the manufacturer’s wiring guidance.
If the equipment starts during the verification check, switch it off and do not handle the wires.
Do not assume thermostat wires are always low voltage
Central HVAC controls commonly use 24 volts, but thermostats are also made for 120/240-volt systems. Honeywell Home’s voltage guidance recommends shutting off system power before installation regardless of voltage. If you cannot identify the system’s voltage, have a local heating and cooling contractor check it rather than treating the wiring as safe to handle.

- 【Notice】Please make sure to read the installation and wiring instructions provided in the pictures carefully before buying. If you are inexperienced with installation, it is advised to be cautious when making a purchase to avoid issues like product failure or incompatibility. (Verify the existing base to ensure only 2 to 5 wires are compatible for installation and wiring).
- 【Thermostat Applications】for with Conventional Single-Stage Heating (Gas/Oil/Electric Furnace) & Ventilation & Air Conditioning, up to 1 Heat and 1 Cool. ( TIP: Does not work Multistage Heating & Air Conditioning, and HVAC Central Air Conditioner Heat Pump System )
- 【Incompatible Systems】Does not work multistage systems (1H/2C, 2H/2C), HVAC heat pump systems (2H/1C, 4H/2C), PTACs, 3-wire hydronic (hot water), dual fuel/hybrid heating. Does not work line voltage systems (120-240V electric baseboards heat); mini split heat pump air conditioner, RV air conditioners mach and roughneck series.
- Suuwer S701 Single Stage Non-Programmable Digital Thermostats for Home 1 Heating and 1 Cooling Single-Stage Systems. ( Dual powered by 24VAC power or 2 AAA batteries, No common wire (c-wire) required on most systems).

When to stop and get professional help
Do not proceed with a DIY replacement if any of these apply:
- The wiring is thick or appears to be line-voltage wiring.
- The system is multistage, variable speed, or zoned.
- The wires or system type do not match the replacement thermostat’s instructions.
- You cannot identify the voltage or verify that power is off.
These systems can require model-specific compatibility checks or more complex installation. ENERGY STAR’s smart thermostat guidance recommends experienced HVAC or electrical help for complex systems and compatibility questions.

- 【Notice】Buyers should thoroughly examine the installation and wiring instructions depicted in the images before buying. It is recommended to exercise caution if you lack experience in installation to avoid potential problems like product malfunction or incompatibility due to incorrect purchases. Note that the base can only be attached with a maximum of 2 to 5 wires, and connections with 6 to 8 wires are not suitable.
- 【Incompatible Systems】Multistage Heat & Cooling, 3-wire Hydronic (Hot Water), Heat Pump with Auxiliary Heating, Heat Pump w/o Auxiliary Heating, Dual Fuel/Hybrid Multistage Heating, Mini Split Systems, RV Thermostat, Convectors/Radiant Ceiling Heat and Electric Baseboard Heat ( 120-240 Volts)
- 【Compatible Systems】Single-Stage Heating & Cooling, Gas/Oil/Electric Furnace (Heat only) , Boiler Radiant (Heat only), Furnace Forced-Air (Heat Only), Gas Fireplace (24 Volts), Cooling Only
- S3001-White Non-programmable thermostat for house conventional single-stage systems up to 1 heat/1 cool, to control the temperature in a room.
- Easy to Install and Use: Large terminal blocks with universal sub-base, can be installed within 30 minutes, clear, easy-to-read backlight LCD display and easy controls make for a user-friendly experience.
Check compatibility before buying a replacement
A thermostat must match both the HVAC system and its wiring. Many smart thermostats use a C-wire for continuous power. Not having one does not automatically rule out a smart thermostat, but it can narrow the choices or mean an adapter is needed. Check the system type, wire labels, voltage, and the manufacturer’s compatibility checker before purchase. If those details are uncertain, get professional advice before choosing a thermostat.
For a straightforward replacement, choose a thermostat confirmed compatible with your furnace and wiring—not simply one that looks similar to the existing unit.
