Researchers proposed a way for recycled oil stored in tiny plant-derived spores to help heal early asphalt cracks; King’s College London reported that a laboratory surface microcrack healed in less than an hour. That is a promising experiment, not proof that potholes repair themselves on working roads.
What did the researchers use AI to develop?
Teams from King’s College London and Swansea University, working with scientists in Chile, used machine learning to study organic molecules in bitumen and build a data-driven model for atomistic simulations. The resulting concept concerns asphalt, the bitumen-based material used to pave roads—not cement or concrete. King’s College London described the work on 3 February 2025.
The proposed asphalt contains tiny porous spores derived from plants and filled with recycled oils. As the material begins to fracture, the spores are intended to release oil into the developing crack, helping reverse the cracking process. The researchers’ aim is to make roads more durable and reduce the need for pothole filling, but the reported experiment tested a small surface crack rather than a pothole under traffic.
What was demonstrated—and what was not?
King’s College London reported that a surface microcrack in asphalt healed completely in less than one hour in a laboratory experiment. The university said the innovation was still in development and had not yet been published at the time of its announcement.

Dr Francisco Martin-Martinez, a computational chemistry expert at King’s College London, said, “Creating asphalt that can heal itself will increase the durability of roads and reduce the need for people to fill in potholes.” That describes the intended benefit; it is not evidence that maintenance can already be eliminated.
Why the distinction matters for road maintenance
Asphalt and concrete are different paving materials, so results for one cannot be treated as proof for the other. The distinction also matters when interpreting the scale of the problem. King’s College London attributed figures from the Asphalt Industry Alliance’s 2024 ALARM survey to annual pothole-filling expenditure of £143.5 million in England and Wales and an estimated £16.3 billion needed to bring roads there up to scratch. Those are UK road-condition figures, not global estimates or measures of savings from the proposed material.

How separate self-healing concrete research works
Self-healing concrete is a real but separate area of research. Projects use different healing agents and triggers, and their findings should not be conflated with the AI-assisted asphalt concept.

The PNNL result—about 2 mm of fracture depth sealed in about four hours—is not directly comparable to the under-an-hour asphalt result. The materials, crack descriptions, and test details differ, so the times do not show that one technology heals faster than the other.

What would show that self-healing asphalt is road-ready?
A laboratory microcrack result is an early step. Before road agencies could rely on the approach, evidence would need to show how the material performs at larger scales and under the stresses roads actually experience.
- Whether the spores and recycled oil can be incorporated consistently into paving asphalt.
- How healing holds up under repeated traffic, temperature swings, water, and other environmental exposure.
- Whether the material retains the strength and durability required for road use over time.
- Results from field trials and a clear route from development to practical supply and installation.
The cited sources do not establish that the asphalt project has advanced to field trials. Until that status and performance are documented, it is best understood as a promising research concept rather than a replacement for conventional pothole repair.
