Build a Car from Common Materials—and What It Takes to Make It RC

A cardboard or recycled-container model can roll on cap wheels and move with a rubber band or small motor. Remote control requires a separate radio system and compatible drive electronics.

You can build a lightweight model car from cardboard or a recycled container, bottle-cap wheels, skewers and straws. A rubber band or small battery-powered motor can make it move, but neither makes it radio controlled: remote steering and throttle require a separate radio link and compatible drive electronics.

Choose the kind of car you want to build

Start with the outcome, because the propulsion method changes the build. These options are instructional projects, not head-to-head tested designs, so there is no established universal winner.

Build Power Materials and complexity What it does
Rubber-band car Energy stored by winding a rubber band around the rear axle Common craft supplies; simplest propulsion option Moves under its own power, but has no remote control
Small-motor car Small DC motor powered by a battery pack Adds a motor, compatible battery pack and a belt or other axle connection Motorized movement, but not necessarily radio controlled
Radio-controlled car Radio transmitter and receiver plus control and drive electronics Advanced project requiring compatible components and additional wiring Can respond to remote commands when the system is designed for that purpose

For a first build from household materials, begin with the rubber-band version. DIY.org suggests a cardboard body about 15 cm by 8 cm, four bottle caps, two straws, skewers or straight sticks, rubber bands, tape, scissors and a ruler. The dimensions are construction guidance for that activity, not a standard size. A recycled-container body is another option described by WVU Extension.

Gather materials and prepare the chassis

Materials for a basic rubber-band car

  • A small, light piece of corrugated cardboard or a clean, empty plastic container
  • Four bottle caps or container lids for wheels
  • Two straight skewers or sticks for axles
  • Short pieces of straw to act as axle guides, if using cardboard
  • Rubber bands, tape, a ruler and a pencil

Use a body that is stiff enough to hold its shape. Keep decoration light until the car rolls freely; added weight can change how easily it moves.

Mark and install the axles

  1. Mark two axle positions underneath the body, one near the front and one near the rear. Keep each line square to the car’s centerline so the axles sit parallel.
  2. For a cardboard chassis, tape short straw sections across the underside at the marks. Thread a skewer through each straw. For a container body, make aligned axle holes in the sides and pass a skewer through them.
  3. Attach one cap or lid to each end of each axle. Make the holes snug enough to hold the axle, but leave clearance between the wheels and body so the wheels do not rub.
  4. Give the car a gentle push on a clear, level surface. Check that the wheels turn and the body rolls without sticking before adding propulsion.

DIY.org notes that cap holes that are too tight or straw supports squeezed out of shape can keep wheels from spinning freely. WVU Extension’s container-body activity also uses skewers and container lids or caps.

Make it move with a rubber band

Connect a rubber band between the chassis and rear axle so turning the axle twists or winds the band. When released, the band unwinds and turns the axle and wheels. Follow the arrangement in the activity you are using: NASA JPL Education’s cardboard rover project uses cardboard, wheels, a pencil axle, rubber bands, a straw, tape and scissors, while WVU Extension describes a rubber-band motor and advises keeping the band taut.

  1. Attach one end of the band to the chassis and loop the other end around the rear axle, following the chosen design.
  2. Turn the rear axle to wind the band. Stop if it slips off or binds against the chassis.
  3. Set the car down on a clear, level surface and release it.
  4. If it stalls or veers, check the wheels, axle alignment and band path before changing the design.

NASA JPL Education describes its challenge as building “a rubber-band-powered rover that can scramble across the room.” That is a description of the activity, not a guaranteed distance for every homemade car; the sources do not establish a universal speed or range.

Add a small motor for battery-powered motion

A motorized build adds a small DC motor and battery pack. TeachEngineering specifies a 3 V mini DC motor, two AA batteries, a 2-AA battery pack with leads and switch, and a rubber-band belt-and-pulley arrangement or direct band connection between the motor and axle. DIY.org describes a similar activity using a small motor, a 2-AA holder, a cardboard or small plastic-container body, bottle-cap wheels and a rubber band.

Use components intended to work together and follow their manufacturers’ wiring and safety instructions; the activity descriptions do not certify arbitrary motor-and-battery combinations. Keep the belt in line with the motor shaft and axle or pulley. If it slips, check alignment and tension: TeachEngineering flags a band that is too loose or too tight as a possible problem. A car that moves under motor power still does not have remote steering or throttle unless those controls are added.

What a true RC version requires

Radio control is a separate control system, not a property of the chassis or power source. A true RC car needs a transmitter and receiver to carry commands, a controller and drive components that can act on those commands, plus a suitable steering arrangement. Select mutually compatible control, motor, driver, steering and power components, and follow the manufacturers’ wiring and safety instructions.

A Bridgewater State University machine-shop project dated Spring 2026 documents one example: a FlySky transmitter/receiver pair, an Arduino controller, motor drivers and DC gearmotors. Its tank-style steering changes direction by driving the two sides differently, and the project includes a signal-loss motor cutoff. This is one design, not a universal parts list or a beginner prescription. In particular, do not transfer that project’s 12 V motors or 3S lithium-polymer battery recommendations to a cardboard beginner build.

Test and troubleshoot one change at a time

  • Wheels rub or do not turn: Check for tight cap holes, squeezed straw guides or too little clearance between a wheel and the body.
  • The car pulls to one side: Recheck that the axles are straight, parallel and square to the chassis centerline; also confirm that no wheel is rubbing.
  • The rubber band slips: Check that it stays on the axle and, for a motorized belt, tracks in line with the motor shaft and axle or pulley.
  • The motorized car stalls: Check belt tension and alignment, then confirm the parts and wiring match their instructions.
  • Comparing revisions: Change one feature per trial—such as wheel size, axle position or band tension—and record distance or time. NASA JPL Education and DIY.org both frame their activities around testing and improving a design; neither establishes a standard performance result.

Build safely

  • Have an adult handle craft-knife cutting and hot-glue steps, and supervise children using scissors or other tools. WVU Extension specifically advises parents to help with craft-knife work.
  • Keep small parts, including caps and loose components, away from young children.
  • Do not let battery terminals or exposed leads touch in a way that shorts the batteries. Use the battery pack and wiring as instructed by their manufacturers.
  • Test on a clear, level surface where the car cannot roll into people, pets or fragile objects.

These precautions address the materials and activities described here; no single improvised wiring arrangement is established as safe for every possible build.
