Designed by Joshua Woodsman, it is best understood as a prototype and design experiment—not a proven off-grid building or a standard shed for sale.
What is the Gardenrobe?
Pin-Up Houses describes the Gardenrobe as “a hybrid between a cabinet and a garden hut.” Its design brings several functions into one long, compact structure: a sheltered spot to sit, general and tool storage, space for bicycles and skis, a chicken coop with an adjoining run, and a pigeon loft on the roof. The project was part of the company’s exploration of small houses made with recycled and environmentally friendly materials.
The range of uses is the point of the design, but it does not make the Gardenrobe a full-size garden shed. Its width is especially limited, so its storage and animal-housing areas need to be considered as separate, compact zones rather than large rooms.
Dimensions and layout
Pin-Up Houses gives the external dimensions, excluding the roof, as 6.3 m by 1.25 m (20 ft 8 in by 4 ft 1 in). New Atlas rounded this to about 20 ft by 4 ft in its July 2022 coverage. Use the official measurements when planning a site or comparing footprints.

The project documentation lists a small sheltered seating area, general storage, a tool area, bicycle and ski storage, a chicken coop and run, and a roof-mounted pigeon loft. Rainwater collection feeds a large tank, though the sources do not state its capacity. They also do not provide a detailed usable-area breakdown for each function.
What the solar and rainwater features do
The solar system is described as a modest convenience for lighting and charging devices, not as a power source for a house. The plans list a solar panel, battery, light and USB plug. They give no panel output, battery capacity, wiring specification or measured energy performance, so the system’s practical runtime and charging capability cannot be established from the published information.

The rainwater collection feature feeds a large tank, but no tank volume or collection performance is specified. The design therefore documents the idea and components, not a quantified water supply.
Materials and construction approach
The official project page describes wooden beams and waterproof construction plywood, with a lightweight roof supported by a red-painted frame. The plans also list a fiberglass roof, fasteners, ground screws and the solar components. Pin-Up Houses presents bolted connections as a way to dismantle and reassemble parts of the structure, with ground screws used for anchoring.

These are design documents rather than an independent structural, electrical or building-code assessment. Anyone adapting the plans would need to evaluate site conditions, local requirements, animal welfare, weather exposure, anchoring and electrical safety for their own project.

Pin-Up Houses’ project page offers free Gardenrobe plans. New Atlas reported on July 6, 2022, that the prototype was not for sale at that time. The available project information does not establish whether a completed Gardenrobe is for sale now.

Pin-Up Houses listed construction time as two hours and material-plus-work cost as US$8,700 in 2022; New Atlas also reported those figures. They are historical claims associated with the prototype, not independently verified assembly results or a current cost estimate. Materials, labor, site preparation and local requirements can change substantially over time and by location.

What to consider before adapting the design
- Check the footprint against your site. The stated dimensions exclude the roof, and the 1.25 m width leaves little room for circulation or bulky storage.
- Plan the functions around each other. Storage, seating, poultry housing and a run compete for space; confirm the actual layout and access requirements in the plans.
- Size the solar system for your intended use. The documented parts establish lighting and USB charging as intended functions, but not a particular output or runtime. A small panel-and-battery kit is only a product category to investigate, not a tested recommendation.
- Verify structure and services locally. The project documents do not establish suitability for every climate, foundation condition, electrical installation or building regulation.
