The right speaker-wire connector is the one that fits the terminals on both your speaker and your amplifier or receiver. Spring clips commonly accept bare wire or speaker pins; compatible binding posts may also accept banana plugs and spade lugs. Check the equipment manuals before choosing, because connector fit varies by model.
What speaker-wire connectors do
Speaker-wire connectors terminate the cable that carries amplified audio from an amplifier or receiver to a passive speaker. They are different from signal connectors such as RCA, 3.5 mm mini-plugs, XLR, HDMI, and optical TOSLINK, which connect sources and other equipment. Klipsch distinguishes speaker-wire connectors from these signal-connector categories.
Bare wire
With bare wire, you strip insulation from the end of the conductor and insert or clamp the exposed metal into a compatible terminal. Twist stranded copper together first so loose strands do not escape and touch another terminal. Bare wire is direct and requires no separate termination, but exposed strands must be kept clear of the opposite polarity.
Banana plugs
A banana plug has a projecting pin that inserts into a compatible opening in a binding post, often a central hole. Plugs are commonly used in pairs, one for each conductor. Confirm that the binding post has a usable opening and that the device permits banana plugs; a binding post’s appearance alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Speaker pins
A speaker pin is a narrow, straight metal termination. It can fit some spring-loaded push terminals and compatible binding posts, but its diameter and shape must match the terminal opening.
Spade lugs
A spade lug has a fork-shaped end that fits around a compatible binding-post collar or screw connection. Tightening the collar or hardware clamps it in place. Check the lug dimensions and terminal design before using one.

Match the connector to the terminal
| Equipment terminal | Common compatible wire ends | How the connection works |
|---|---|---|
| Spring clip or spring-loaded push terminal | Bare wire or speaker pin | Press the clip, insert the conductor or pin, then release it to clamp the connection. Monoprice says its spring clips do not accept banana plugs or spades. Monoprice’s connection guide. |
| Five-way or otherwise compatible binding post | Bare wire, pin, banana plug, or spade, depending on design | Bare wire or a pin may be clamped through a side opening; a banana plug goes into a central opening; a spade fits around the collar. JBL documents all four options on its Studio 5 terminals, while Audioengine describes them for its five-way binding posts. JBL Studio 570 owner’s manual; Audioengine P4 setup instructions. |
| Screw- or bolt-type connection | Spade or ring lug where the hardware is designed for it | Verify the hardware and lug dimensions; not every screw connection accepts every lug. Klipsch’s connector guide. |
These are common patterns, not a guarantee for every model. Rotel advises checking with the dealer when it is unclear whether equipment accepts spades or pins. Rotel’s FAQ on speaker-cable terminations.

Check both ends first
Inspect the speaker and amplifier or receiver, then check both manuals. The ends of one cable do not have to use the same termination: for example, bare wire can connect to a spring clip at one end while a compatible plug or spade is used at a binding post at the other.

Choose for fit and handling
Bare wire is a straightforward option when the terminals support it. Rotel notes that repeated disconnection can break off strands, and loose strands can cause problems if they touch another conductor or the equipment. Banana plugs, pins, or spades can make repeated connection and disconnection more convenient when the hardware accepts them. Rotel’s FAQ.

Connect speaker wire safely
- Turn off the equipment. JBL advises switching off and preferably unplugging system components before making connections. JBL Studio 570 owner’s manual.
- Prepare the wire to the equipment’s instructions. Strip only the amount of insulation specified for the terminal, twist stranded copper together, and check for loose strands. The guides give different model-specific examples—Audioengine says ½ inch for its setup, while Monoprice says about 3/8 inch—so neither length should be treated as universal. Audioengine P4 setup; Monoprice guide.
- Connect positive to positive and negative to negative. Match the + terminal on the amplifier or receiver to + on the speaker, and – to –. JBL warns that reversed polarity can diminish bass performance and harm stereo imaging.
- Keep the conductors apart. Make sure no bare copper or stray strand bridges the positive and negative terminals. JBL warns that touching wires can create a short circuit that may damage the receiver or amplifier.
- Check that each termination is secure. Ensure a spring clip has closed on the wire or pin, a binding-post collar is tightened on the conductor or spade, or a banana plug is seated in a compatible opening.
Common connection mistakes to avoid
- Buying banana plugs or spades before confirming the terminal accepts them.
- Assuming every binding post has an open center for a banana plug.
- Leaving long exposed wire or loose strands that could touch another terminal.
- Reversing positive and negative at one end of the cable.
- Using an arbitrary strip length instead of following the equipment instructions.
