The 15 ideas below span lighting, climate, entry, monitoring, and household tasks. Before buying, check that each device works with your chosen platform, fits your home, and has the power, wiring, network coverage, and hub it needs.
Start with compatibility and installation
Smart-home products are not automatically interchangeable. Google Home’s current compatibility guide lists Matter device categories including lighting and electrical controls, climate controls, locks, garage controllers, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, window coverings, media devices, sensors, and controllers or bridges. That does not mean every product in those categories supports Matter. Check the exact model and the platform you plan to use.
For Google Home Matter devices, Google says a Matter hub is needed for setup, control, and automation while away from home. Other platforms may have different requirements. Check the device maker’s instructions as well as the platform’s compatibility list before purchasing. Google Home’s compatible-device guide explains its requirements and supported categories.
- Fit and wiring: Confirm a lock suits the door and lock preparation; check that a thermostat matches the HVAC system and that a wired doorbell has suitable wiring.
- Power and electrical load: For plugs and switches, verify the device’s rating against the appliance and local electrical requirements.
- Connectivity: Check Wi-Fi or other network coverage where the device will be installed, especially at exterior doors, garages, and basements.
- Routine: Decide what task the gadget should make easier before choosing a model.
These are category ideas, not a ranked list of current models. Product examples in HP’s and Forbes Vetted’s 2024 guides are dated; availability and compatibility can change.

15 smart-home gadgets to consider
1. Smart plug
A smart plug can add app, schedule, or voice control to a suitable plug-in lamp or appliance. It is a straightforward first automation if the device can safely be switched by cutting power. Check the plug’s load rating, outlet fit, regional version, and platform support; not every appliance should be operated this way. Google lists plugs among the Matter device types supported by Google Home. Check Google Home compatibility requirements before selecting a model.
2. Smart bulbs
Connected bulbs can be scheduled or controlled by app or voice, making them useful for lamps and rooms where replacing the bulb is easier than changing wiring. Confirm bulb base, brightness, color features, and platform support. HP’s 2024 guide names Philips Hue as an example, not a current comparative winner. HP’s 2024 guide is a dated source for that example.
3. Smart wall switch
A connected switch controls a hardwired light fixture and may be a better fit than smart bulbs when several lights share a switch. Installation may involve electrical wiring; check the switch type, wiring in the wall box, and whether the device requires a neutral wire. HP’s 2024 guide names a Kasa Wi-Fi switch as an example, but the right replacement depends on the home’s wiring and the model’s requirements. See HP’s dated examples.

4. Smart thermostat

Check the HVAC type, wiring, and installation instructions before buying; some setups may require professional help. Google lists thermostats and HVAC controllers among its Matter categories, but support is model-specific. Review Google Home’s compatibility guidance.

A smart lock can make entry more convenient through supported access methods and app controls. First confirm the door’s thickness, bore holes, backset, handing, and existing lock type against the manufacturer’s fit guide. Aqara’s CES 2024 announcement described its U300 lever lock as Matter- and Thread-compatible, with fingerprint, PIN, NFC, or voice-assistant access; that is the manufacturer’s description of that model, not an independent assessment. 6. Door or window contact sensor
A contact sensor can notify you when a monitored door or window opens and can serve as a trigger for automations. Check how it attaches, whether the frame and sash leave enough room, and what hub or platform it needs. Google lists contact sensors among Matter device types. Google’s device guide outlines its compatibility requirements.

7. Motion sensor
A motion sensor can trigger lights or notifications in spaces such as a hallway, entry, or utility room. Placement matters: walls, furniture, pets, and the sensor’s detection range can affect what it sees. Check the model’s supported platform and whether it needs a separate hub. Google lists motion sensors among Matter categories. See Google Home’s Matter guidance.
8. Temperature sensor
A separate temperature sensor can report conditions in a room that differs from the thermostat’s location, such as an upstairs bedroom or basement. It may support automations when paired with compatible controls. Confirm whether the sensor can communicate with your platform directly or needs a hub; Google lists temperature sensors among Matter device types. Check the supported-device list.

9. Water-leak sensor
A leak sensor can send an alert when water reaches its contacts, making it worth considering near a water heater, sink, washing machine, or other vulnerable location. Check whether the device provides local or remote alerts, its connectivity requirements, and whether it can trigger a compatible shutoff device. Do not assume that a sensor alone stops water flow. 10. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarm
A connected alarm may add remote notifications or integration with other devices, but it must still meet the home’s life-safety needs and applicable local requirements. Verify alarm type, placement instructions, power source, certification, interconnection behavior, and compatibility before replacing an existing alarm. Google lists smoke and carbon monoxide alarms among Matter device categories; implementation varies by model. Consult Google’s category and compatibility guide.
11. Smart garage-door controller
A compatible controller can add app-based status checks or remote operation to some garage-door openers. Confirm compatibility with the opener and safety sensors, and follow the manufacturer’s installation and operating instructions. Google lists garage controllers among its Matter categories, but that does not guarantee support for every opener or controller. Check model-specific compatibility.
12. Motorized window coverings
Connected blinds or shades can be scheduled or controlled through an app or compatible voice system. Measure the window and check mounting clearance, power options, and whether the covering is sold in a size and style that fits the opening. Google includes window coverings among its Matter device categories; verify support for the specific product. Google’s guide lists supported categories and requirements.

13. Indoor or outdoor camera
A camera can help you check an entry or room, but compare more than resolution: consider power, Wi-Fi coverage at the mounting point, storage terms, privacy controls, and platform support. For an outdoor installation, check the product’s environmental rating and mounting instructions. Aqara’s catalog includes cameras, but a catalog listing is not evidence of comparative quality. 14. Video doorbell
A connected doorbell camera can provide an entry view and alerts, but the practical choice depends on whether the location has suitable existing wiring or needs a battery-powered model. Check wiring and transformer requirements, Wi-Fi coverage, storage and subscription terms, and compatibility with your smart-home platform. 15. Smart speaker or display
A speaker or display can provide a voice interface or a visible control point for compatible devices. The functions available depend on the model, platform, and connected products. For a small, reversible start, consider a properly rated smart plug for a suitable lamp. For a renovation or larger project, plan hardwired switches, thermostat compatibility, doorbell wiring, network coverage, and hub placement before finishes are closed up. In either case, select the platform first, verify device support, and add products around routines that matter to the people using the home.
