As a quick reference, Samsung’s guidance calls a loose one-third-full drum small, one-half full medium, and three-quarters full large. These are manufacturer estimates, not a universal standard; never pack or press laundry down to reach a fill level.
Quick chart: estimate load size by drum fill and weight
Samsung’s US guidance estimates laundry weight relative to washer capacity. For a 4.0-cubic-foot Samsung washer, that works out to the following examples. The figures are estimates, not limits that apply to every machine.

Samsung also lists 3 lb as a minimum recommended load weight for its guidance. Check your washer’s manual for its own minimums and cycle-specific directions. Samsung’s US load-size guidance is the source for the chart and example.
Estimate weight using familiar laundry items
Samsung’s approximate item weights can help make the weight estimates easier to picture. Actual weight varies with item size, fabric and construction.

Washer capacity labels are not the same as load size
“Small,” “medium” and “large” can describe the washer’s capacity, not how much laundry you put in for one wash. Whirlpool’s approximate capacity guide uses these categories and towel counts:

The towel-count ranges overlap because towel dimensions and washer designs differ. Whirlpool says there is no industry-wide standard for the small, medium and large capacity labels, so use its chart as an approximate guide rather than a universal classification. Load the drum without crowding or compressing clothes
- Place laundry in a loose pile; do not push it down or cram extra items into the drum.
- Leave enough room for the load to move during the cycle, and follow your washer’s loading instructions.
- For bulky bedding, use the washer’s specific guidance: Samsung says large bedding should fit snugly without being cramped.
- Samsung’s US guidance sets limits of 4.4 lb or less for heavy materials such as wool and 6.6 lb or less for comforters and blankets. Those are Samsung-specific estimates; confirm the limits for your machine and cycle.

Choose detergent by the load and product instructions
There is no single detergent dose that fits every load. Whirlpool says dosage depends on the detergent label, soil level and load size; HE washers should use HE detergent. Follow both the detergent packaging and your washer’s manual rather than treating load weight as a dose chart. See Whirlpool’s detergent guidance.

If you are choosing a washer, consider capacity and space separately
Match internal capacity to your household’s laundry routine and the largest items you expect to wash, such as bedding. Exterior dimensions do not necessarily indicate drum capacity, so check both the model’s capacity and whether its physical dimensions fit the available space.
