For ordinary burnt-on food, try a warm, soapy soak first; if needed, move to a gentle baking-soda paste or another method the manufacturer approves. Avoid harsh scrubbing, especially on coated cookware.
Choose a method that suits the pot
Whirlpool advises reading the pan’s use-and-care guide because cooking methods and scorch prevention vary by material. Check that guide before using acids, abrasives, or a simmering method. The table compares the options below; it is not a ranking of effectiveness, as no measured comparison is available.

Six ways to loosen burnt-on food
1. Soak in warm, soapy water
For stuck-on food, add hot water and dish detergent and let the pot soak for 15 to 30 minutes, as the American Cleaning Institute suggests. Drain it, then wash and gently scrub. Do not submerge cookware if its instructions say not to. American Cleaning Institute guidance.
2. Try a baking-soda paste
Mix baking soda with enough water to make a paste, then apply it to the residue if the cookware maker permits this approach. Work gently with a soft sponge or nylon brush; a mild abrasive can still damage a sensitive finish if you scrub hard. 3. Simmer vinegar and water only when approved
Whirlpool lists vinegar as a household cleaning option, but cautions that it can be too acidic for stainless steel or cast iron. KitchenAid likewise warns against acids such as vinegar on cast iron. 4. Use a lemon simmer only for compatible cookware
Whirlpool describes simmering lemon and water as an option for aluminum, but does not recommend it for cast iron or stainless steel. Since cookware finishes and care instructions vary, use this method only if the pot’s manufacturer approves it. Whirlpool’s material-specific guidance.

5. Scrub cast-iron scorch marks with salt
Whirlpool describes salt as an option for scorch marks and grease on cast iron. Follow the cookware maker’s cast-iron care directions and use an appropriate brush or sponge rather than an abrasive metal tool. Whirlpool’s burnt-pan guidance.
6. Simmer cream of tartar and water
Whirlpool’s recipe is one tablespoon of cream of tartar in one cup of water: bring it to a boil, let it cool, then scrub with a sponge or nylon brush. Adjust for the cookware material
Cast iron
Acids such as vinegar and lemon juice can cause rust and deteriorate the seasoned coating, according to KitchenAid. Whirlpool describes salt as an option for cast-iron scorch marks. Stainless steel and aluminum
Whirlpool cautions that vinegar or lemon may be too acidic for stainless steel, while describing cream of tartar and water as an option for stainless steel and aluminum. Nonstick and other coated finishes
Use the product’s care guide and a non-abrasive sponge or nylon tool. Avoid metal scrubbers and forceful scraping. The guidance cited here does not establish an acid recipe that is safe for every coating formulation.

Do not automatically escalate to harsher chemicals or more force. Stop if the surface is being scratched, if the finish appears damaged, or if the care guide rules out the method. Whirlpool also describes adding water to a hot pan and loosening residue with a wooden spoon or spatula, but that approach is not suitable for every coating or every temperature condition.
