Type MC cable is not universally required in place of other wiring methods. The National Electrical Code (NEC) generally permits it for services, feeders, branch circuits, and various indoor and outdoor installations when the cable is identified for the application and all applicable code conditions are met. The adopted code edition and local amendments determine what applies to a specific project.
When is MC cable required?
The reviewed NEC Article 330 material establishes conditions under which Type MC cable is permitted; it does not establish a universal requirement to use MC cable instead of every other wiring method. Whether MC cable is required for a particular installation depends on the applicable code provisions, project conditions, and local requirements. Confirm the adopted code and any amendments with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
NFPA identifies the 2026 National Electrical Code as its latest edition, but that does not mean a state or municipality has adopted it. NFPA’s NFPA 70 code development and edition status and 2026 NEC product page provide edition information; check the rules in force where the work will be done.
Where does the NEC generally permit MC cable?
NFPA’s Article 330 code-development material for the 2026 NEC cycle lists Type MC cable for services, feeders, and branch circuits; power, lighting, control, and signal circuits; and indoor or outdoor, exposed or concealed installations. It also describes use in raceways. These are general permissions, not a guarantee that any cable marked MC is suitable for every location or circuit. The cable’s identification, ratings, listing, installation, and other applicable code provisions still govern.

The same material describes additional applications subject to specific conditions:
- Direct burial and cable trays: The cable must be identified for the use, and applicable additional code requirements must be followed.
- Aerial runs: The material describes use on a messenger, subject to applicable requirements.
- Hazardous (classified) locations: MC cable is allowed only where another applicable NEC article specifically permits it; ordinary MC cable is not automatically acceptable.
- Masonry: The cited text allows use in dry locations when embedded in the plaster finish on brick or other masonry. That allowance does not cover damp or wet locations.
See the NFPA Article 330 code-development material for the provisions reviewed. It is code-development text, not a substitute for the final NEC edition adopted for a project.

- Conductors are made with soft drawn copper.
- conductors are cabled together and a binder tape bearing the print legend is wrapped around the assembly
- Installation in cable tray and approved raceways.
Can MC cable be used outdoors or in wet locations?
Outdoor use is among the general applications described in the Article 330 material, but damp or wet use has additional moisture-protection conditions. The reviewed text requires a jacket over the metallic covering and one of the stated protections: the metallic covering is impervious to moisture, a moisture-impervious jacket is beneath the metal covering, or the insulated conductors are listed for wet locations. The material states an exception for MC cable with copper armor impervious to moisture.
Do not infer wet-location suitability from the “MC” designation alone. Check the specific cable’s markings and listing, product documentation, and the exact text in the locally adopted code before selecting it. UL’s Wire and Cable Application Guide explains how cable type designations, markings, and guide information communicate suitability, ratings, limitations, and special conditions.

What should you verify before installing MC cable?
- Identification and ratings: Confirm the cable type, listing, voltage and temperature ratings, conductor material, and location-specific markings against the intended installation.
- Use-specific identification: For direct burial or cable-tray installation, confirm the cable is identified for that use and check the applicable additional requirements.
- Classified locations: Verify that a separate applicable NEC provision specifically permits the cable in the particular hazardous location.
- Exposure and physical protection: The reviewed code-development material says exposed runs generally follow the building finish or running boards. It also describes an underside-of-joists allowance subject to support and protection-from-physical-damage conditions. Confirm the final adopted text for the project.
- Fittings and supports: Use fittings, connectors, and support or securement hardware that are listed or identified as required and compatible with the cable and installation.
How often must MC cable be supported?
NFPA Panel 6 code-development material states: “Unless otherwise permitted in this Code, cables shall be supported at intervals not exceeding 1.8 m (6 ft).” This is a proposed-code-development statement, not confirmation of the controlling rule for every installation. Check the final wording, exceptions, and applicable requirements in the NEC edition adopted by the project’s jurisdiction before relying on that interval.

How to decide whether MC cable fits a project
- Identify the location and application. Determine the circuit purpose, whether the run is indoors or outdoors, exposed or concealed, and whether it is in a wet, damp, masonry, tray, burial, or classified environment.
- Check the locally adopted code. Confirm the NEC edition and local amendments with the AHJ; do not assume the latest NFPA edition is the one enforced at the site.
- Match the product to the use. Review the cable’s marking, listing, ratings, and manufacturer documentation for the specific conditions.
- Verify installation details. Check applicable rules for fittings, routing, physical protection, support, securement, and terminations.
- Confirm the decision with the project authority. Where the code or product identification is unclear, resolve it with the AHJ or a qualified electrical professional before installation.
