The green facade of Bulgari’s Shanghai flagship is made from sintered glass produced with recycled champagne, beer and other glass bottles—not plastic. Designed by MVRDV for the store at Shanghai Plaza 66, the layered, mostly windowless exterior pairs translucent green glass with gold-colored brass trim and nighttime backlighting.
What building uses recycled bottles in its facade?
The project is Bulgari’s flagship store at Shanghai Plaza 66 on Nanjing Road in Shanghai, China. MVRDV’s project record lists it as realized in 2020–2021 and gives the facade surface as 274 m²; that figure is the facade area, not the store’s interior floor area. MVRDV’s project record credits Bulgari as client, MVRDV as architect and MAGNA Glaskeramik GmbH as glass manufacturer.
Is the facade made from glass or plastic?
It is made from recycled glass, not plastic. MVRDV describes the panels as sintered green glass made from recycled champagne, beer and other glass bottles. The firm says the glass was produced at the Magna factory in Teutschenthal, Germany, which specializes in glass treatment. The project sources do not give a detailed manufacturing sequence, so they do not establish specific processing steps beyond the use of sintered recycled-glass panels.
How does the facade turn bottle glass into a design feature?
Layered geometry
The mostly windowless exterior uses overlapping panels to build a pattern inspired by portals and cornices from Bulgari’s original boutique on Via dei Condotti in Rome. MVRDV also connects the layered motif to Shanghai’s Art Deco history. Rather than framing conventional windows, the panels give the facade its depth and ornament.

Green glass, brass and light
The translucent green glass is paired with gold-colored brass trim, creating a finish intended to evoke jade jewelry. Backlighting brings out the glass texture after dark. MVRDV says the backlight uses less than half the energy of a typical comparable installation. That is the architect’s claim; its announcement does not provide a comparison method or measurement data for independent verification. MVRDV’s December 2021 project announcement describes the design and material choices.
What the recycled-glass claim does—and does not—establish
The project demonstrates the use of recycled bottle glass in a custom luxury-retail facade. MVRDV founding partner Jacob van Rijs described the intent this way: “The Shanghai store encapsulates the value of these experiments: given the right treatment and detailing, leftover champagne and beer bottles, which would otherwise be thrown away, become a jewel for the city.”

That material reuse is not, by itself, proof of a net environmental benefit for the whole store. The cited project information does not report lifecycle emissions, quantified carbon savings, a waste-diversion total or an independently verified assessment that the building is circular. MVRDV frames the work as part of a broader goal of using 100% circular-economy materials in store designs; that goal should not be mistaken for evidence that this individual project achieved 100% circularity.
