A tap cuts threads inside a hole; a die cuts threads on the outside of a rod. To choose the right one, match the full thread marking—including its size and pitch—to the fastener or thread you need. For a new internal thread, also use the correct tap-drill size; a close-looking tool or an oversized hole can produce a poor fit.
What the tools in a tap and die set do
- Tap: cuts internal threads in a drilled hole. A matching tap can also clean up damaged or dirty internal threads.
- Die: cuts external threads on a rod. A matching die can also clean up existing external threads.
- Holders: a tap wrench holds and turns a tap; a die stock holds and turns a die. Use a holder that fits the tool securely.
Both tools must match the thread’s size and form. Using a near match can damage the workpiece or tool. IRWIN explains when to use each tool and the basic hand-cutting method.
How to read the size marking
Read the whole marking, not just the nominal diameter. Metric tools show a nominal size and pitch: for example, Milwaukee lists tools marked M3 × 0.50, M4 × 0.70, and M6 × 1.00. The number after the multiplication sign is the pitch—the distance between thread crests in millimetres. Inch-series markings use their own size and threads-per-inch conventions, so do not assume an inch tool matches a metric one.
Before selecting a tap or die, compare its marking with the mating fastener or the thread specification. A suitable pitch gauge can help identify an existing thread. A tool that matches diameter but not pitch is still the wrong tool. Milwaukee’s metric set listing illustrates metric size-and-pitch markings; BGS lists a screw pitch gauge among its kit contents.

Cutting a new internal thread with a tap
- Confirm the thread and drill size. Match the tap to the required thread, then use the tap-drill chart for that exact size and thread. The metric rule of thumb is nominal diameter minus pitch, but treat it as a check—not a substitute for the chart. An oversized hole can leave the internal thread incorrectly sized.
- Secure the work and fit the tap. Hold the workpiece so it cannot move, and secure the tap in a compatible tap wrench.
- Start square. Align the tap as perpendicular to the hole as possible. Turn steadily rather than forcing it at an angle.
- Clear chips as you cut. IRWIN’s hand method is to turn two or three full turns, reverse about one-half to three-quarters of a turn to break chips, then continue. Use quality cutting fluid as appropriate for the material and tool instructions; IRWIN says fluid helps extend tool life and improve thread quality.
- Follow the tool instructions for completion. When finished, remove the tap carefully and clear chips from the work. Avoid forcing a tool that binds.
Use the tap-drill chart supplied with your set when available. Park Tool describes the metric diameter-minus-pitch rule, while IRWIN recommends consulting the set’s tap/drill chart and keeping the tap aligned.
Cutting an external thread with a die
- Match the die to the intended thread. Check both size and pitch against the mating part or specification. IRWIN’s example: a 3/8-inch rod calls for a 3/8-inch die.
- Secure the die in its die stock. Check that it is seated and held securely.
- Use the instructions for your die’s starting orientation. Die designs vary, so there is no universal starting orientation established for every set. Do not guess if the tool’s instructions specify how to position it.
- Turn steadily and avoid force. If the die binds or the thread does not start cleanly, stop and check alignment, workpiece size, and thread match rather than forcing the cut.
What to look for when comparing sets
Piece count alone does not show whether a set suits your work. Compare thread system, size and pitch coverage, tap styles, drill-bit coverage, holders, and whether a pitch gauge is included. - Use thread cutters only for their intended materials and applications, and follow the set’s instructions.
- Make sure each cutter is correctly and securely applied before turning it.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect against shavings and splinters, as BGS advises.
- Use the correct drill size and thread form. Stop if a tap or die binds; forcing a mismatched or misaligned tool risks damaging the work or tool.
BGS safety guidance emphasizes intended applications, secure use, and protective equipment.
