Turn a flattened pumpkin into a temporary living centerpiece by covering it with sphagnum moss and succulent cuttings. Or give the plants you already own a seasonal setting with pumpkins, yard finds and a themed planter. Keep plant identity and household safety in mind, especially where pets can reach.
How do I make a succulent pumpkin?
A succulent-topped pumpkin or gourd makes a seasonal display without carving. UC ANR and UC Cooperative Extension Placer and Nevada Counties describe a design that uses the pumpkin as a temporary base; when it softens, the succulent-covered top can be moved to a container.
Gather the materials
- A flattened pumpkin or gourd
- Small to medium succulent cuttings
- Sphagnum moss
- Spray adhesive
- Clear gel craft glue or hot glue and glue sticks
- A saucer or piece of cardboard cut to fit beneath the display
The guide suggests hens-and-chicks and sedums because their slower growth can help the arrangement retain its shape. Optional trailing cuttings, such as burro’s tail or string of pearls, can spill over the sides.
Build the arrangement
- Choose a flattened pumpkin or gourd and remove its stem.
- Apply spray adhesive to the top. Let it dry thoroughly, then arrange sphagnum moss in a circular layer about one inch thick while the adhesive is tacky.
- Set three of the tallest cuttings at the center. Use clear gel craft glue or hot glue to anchor each cutting at its stem base.
- Add rings of cuttings around the center, packing them closely into a mound. A roughly symmetrical shape gives the centerpiece a balanced look; add trailing cuttings around the edges if desired.

Choose a display location
Indoors, place the arrangement in bright, indirect light and set it on a saucer or shaped cardboard base to protect furniture from moisture. The guide advises spritzing the moss to moisten it and help roots form; it does not establish a universal watering schedule.
For an outdoor display, choose a sheltered spot away from harsh sun, freezing temperatures and rain. Local weather and the needs of the particular succulents still matter.

Move the top when the pumpkin softens
The pumpkin is not a permanent planter. When it begins to soften, slice off the section carrying the succulents and place that top in a container. According to the guide, the pumpkin flesh decomposes as the succulents root.
How can I decorate existing houseplants for Halloween?
You do not need to glue cuttings to a pumpkin to make a seasonal display. UF/IFAS Extension Polk County suggests arranging existing container plants with seasonal objects found in the yard, or using a pumpkin, urn or cauldron-shaped planter as the visual centerpiece.

A dramatic name or appearance does not tell you whether a plant is safe. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach warns that all parts of wolf’s-bane (Aconitum) are highly toxic. Do not select unfamiliar plants for a display without identifying the exact species and checking the relevant safety information.

If pets can reach the arrangement, check each plant’s identity and toxicity before bringing it within reach. The University of New Hampshire Extension lists African violet, Boston fern, peperomia and spider plant among plants described as non-poisonous, but a general list is not a substitute for verifying the exact species.
