To add a beaded-board look to a cabinet door or panel, cut 1/4-inch grooves with a table-saw dado set, break the groove edges, and glue a 1/4-inch dowel into each groove. The method was shared by Robert Holzer, Jr., of Phoenix, Arizona, in WOOD Magazine’s June 13, 2016 article, “Put a bead in any board.”
How the method works
Holzer wanted the beaded-board appearance on cabinet doors without beading a solid-wood panel. The article notes that router bits designed for this task do not work in the middle of a panel. His alternative is to make grooves in the panel and use dowels to form the beads.
Steps for adding the beads
- Cut the grooves. Use a dado set on a table saw to cut 1/4-inch grooves where you want the beads.
- Break the groove edges. Ease the edges of each groove before fitting the dowel.
- Glue in the dowels. Glue a 1/4-inch dowel into each groove.
Choose a dowel wood for contrast
For a more visible detail, use dowels made from a contrasting wood species. Holzer suggests: “Try using this technique with a contrasting species of dowel for visual effect.”
The article does not specify a glue type, joint-preparation details, or a particular panel construction, so those choices are not defined by this method.
