For everyday paper crafts and bookbinding, start with a neutral-pH PVA adhesive specifically labeled for paper or bookbinding. For conservation repairs where future release matters, consider a reversible conservation adhesive, starch paste, or methyl cellulose instead. There is no single best choice for every paper or project: the right adhesive depends on the paper, moisture tolerance, desired flexibility, and whether the bond may need to be undone.

Choose by project, not by glue type alone

Adhesives sold for paper can differ in intended use and in claims about pH, reversibility, flexibility, and finish. Check the exact product label or technical information rather than assuming that every product in a broad category shares the same properties. The sources cited here describe individual products; they do not provide a controlled head-to-head ranking of strength, drying time, distortion, or aging.

  • Bookbinding and routine paper crafts: Look for neutral-pH PVA labeled for paper or bookbinding.
  • Conservation repairs: Prioritize a product described as reversible or consult a qualified conservator for valuable or fragile material.
  • General crafts: A paper-specific craft glue may suit ordinary projects, but the words “paper glue” alone do not establish archival suitability.
  • Production binding: Check that the adhesive and application method suit the equipment, scale, and materials involved.

Neutral-pH PVA for paper or bookbinding General bookbinding and paper projects H.B. Fuller describes Fullabond Bookbinding as a neutral-pH PVA for binding books and paper products. Jerry’s Artarama lists Lineco Neutral pH Adhesive for bookbinding, collage, and paper crafts. H.B. Fuller; Jerry’s Artarama Confirm intended use, pH or acid-free claims, and flexibility for the exact product.
Starch paste or methyl cellulose Conservation-style repair where handling and future release matter Evasol says its neutral, buffered, reconstitutable adhesive can be mixed with starch paste or methyl cellulose. JWB discusses conservation adhesives for paper and book-binding restoration. Evasol; JWB Check preparation, working time, support requirements, and guidance for the specific object.
Reversible conservation adhesive Paper and book-binding restoration JWB describes Evacon-R as reversible and used in conservation and restoration. JWB Verify the formulation and suitability for the material and treatment; do not generalize the claim to all PVA.
General craft paper glue Everyday art and craft projects Bostik’s paper-glue technical data sheet describes a PVA paper glue that dries with a clear glue line. Bostik technical data sheet Do not infer archival suitability from a paper-glue label; check the product’s own claims.

What to check before buying

Intended use and preservation claims

Prefer an adhesive whose stated use matches the job. For routine binding, a product specifically made for paper or bookbinding is a more relevant starting point than a glue intended for unrelated materials. If long-term preservation matters, check the exact product’s pH, acid-free, and reversibility claims. These are formulation-specific attributes, not guarantees that apply to every PVA adhesive.

Reversibility and the value of the paper

Reversibility matters when a repair may need to be removed or adjusted later. University Products describes its white neutral-pH conservation adhesive as water-reversible, flexible, and clear after drying; JWB describes Evacon-R as reversible for paper and book-binding restoration. Those are claims about named products, not a universal property of PVA. For a significant or fragile item, consult a qualified conservator before making a permanent repair.

Working time, moisture, and finish

Consider how long you need to position the sheets, how much moisture the paper can tolerate, whether the bond needs to flex, and whether a visible glue line is acceptable. The cited product pages and data sheet offer some product-specific information, but they do not establish a comparative performance ranking across adhesive types. Test an inconspicuous sample when the paper and project allow it.

Scale and application method

A product suited to hand-applied craft work may not suit production binding. Before choosing an industrial or specialist adhesive, confirm that its recommended application method and handling requirements fit your process and equipment.

A practical selection process

  1. Identify the paper and purpose. Decide whether you are making a craft project, binding a book, or repairing an existing item.
  2. Decide whether the bond must be reversible. For valuable or fragile paper, avoid assuming a permanent craft adhesive is appropriate; seek conservation guidance where warranted.
  3. Read the exact product information. Check intended use, pH or acid-free statements, reversibility, flexibility, drying finish, and any preparation or application directions.
  4. Match the adhesive to the working conditions. Consider positioning time, moisture tolerance, equipment, and the scale of the job.
  5. Test if appropriate. A small sample can reveal whether the adhesive affects the paper or leaves an unacceptable glue line, but it does not establish long-term archival performance.

What the product claims do—and do not—establish

H.B. Fuller describes Fullabond Bookbinding as “a neutral pH PVA adhesive designed for the binding of books and paper products where acid free bonds are a benefit.” That statement supports its intended use and the manufacturer’s stated pH claim; it is not an independent comparison against other adhesives. Product formulations and availability can change, so check current manufacturer or supplier information when purchasing.
