There is no established universal “best” detergent in the manufacturer guidance available: compatibility and correct dosing matter more than a brand name. Too much detergent can create excess suds, interfere with rinsing, and extend the cycle.
What detergent should you use in a front-load washer?
Use HE detergent, and check that the product and format suit your particular washer and dispenser. Whirlpool and LG both direct users of their front-load washers to use HE detergent. Because models and dispensers differ, the washer manual takes precedence on where and how to add it.
Whirlpool recommends its own Swash Laundry Detergent and says it is designed for HE and non-HE machines. That is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not an independent comparison showing that Swash cleans better than other HE detergents. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a single best-performing brand.
How to compare detergents before buying
- Washer compatibility: Look for an HE or front-load-compatible label, and confirm it matches the washer manual.
- Dosing instructions: Choose a product whose label clearly explains dosage. HE formulas vary in concentration, so do not assume the same amount works across brands.
- Dispenser fit: Check whether your machine accepts liquid, powder, or single-dose packs in the intended compartment. Bulk dispensers can have specific requirements.
- Personal needs: Fragrance, ingredients, and fabric-care preferences can guide your choice, but the cited manufacturer materials do not compare detergents on these attributes or name a winner.
- Cost per wash: Compare package price against the number of washes at the product’s recommended dose. Container size alone does not show which product costs less per load.
How much detergent should you use?
There is no reliable universal amount to use for every front-load washer. Follow the detergent label and the washer manual, accounting for load size, soil level, product type, and concentration. Whirlpool says HE detergents vary in concentration and advises dosing according to soil level and load size. LG likewise says dosage varies by brand and type and instructs users not to fill a liquid-detergent compartment past its MAX line.

Adding extra detergent does not necessarily improve cleaning. Whirlpool warns that excess detergent or non-HE detergent can produce excessive suds, reduce spin speed, and lengthen a cycle while the machine adds rinses. Its front-load guidance also identifies longer cycles, poor rinsing, and poor cleaning performance as possible results of too much detergent. Follow the instructions for your exact product and model rather than using a fixed spoon measure or cap line.
Where should detergent go?
Use the compartment or location specified by your washer manual. Dispenser instructions can vary by model and product format. For the Whirlpool models covered by its bulk-dispenser guidance, the bulk dispenser is for HE liquid detergent; packets and powder go directly in the basket, and a single-dose packet should not be used at the same time as the bulk dispenser. Follow your own model’s manual before applying those model-specific directions.

What if there are few or no visible suds?
Low visible suds do not, by themselves, mean a front-load washer is failing to clean. LG’s support guidance for its front-load washers says that visible suds are not a measure of proper cleaning and that little or no visible suds can be normal. This is LG-specific guidance; check your own washer’s manual if you are concerned about performance.
What to do if the washer reports excess suds
For the Whirlpool front-load guidance cited here, let the cycle continue while the washer works to remove suds. If the machine reports that the cycle has ended but excess suds remain, Whirlpool says a rinse-and-spin cycle may help. Alert meanings and recovery steps can be model-specific, so consult the manual for your washer.

Detergent is only part of odor prevention
Changing detergent alone may not prevent washer odors. Whirlpool’s front-load maintenance guidance recommends leaving the door open between loads, promptly removing wet clothing, cleaning the dispenser drawer as directed in the owner’s manual, and running the Clean Washer cycle. The manual should determine which cleaning product is appropriate; Whirlpool lists affresh washer cleaner, liquid chlorine bleach, or another washer-cleaning product as possible options for that cycle.
