No—not by adding an X-Y table or cross-slide vise. Those accessories can position and hold work, but they do not establish that a drill press is approved or suitable for milling. Before attempting any operation, check the manual for the exact press; if the job requires side cutting and its manufacturer does not explicitly authorize milling, use a milling machine instead.
Why an X-Y table does not convert a drill press
An X-Y table or cross-slide vise changes how you position the work. It does not, by itself, establish that the press’s spindle, quill, bearings, tool retention, or overall setup are suitable for milling. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) advises securing drill-press work with clamps or a drill vise to prevent it from spinning; that workholding guidance is not approval to mill on a drill press. CCOHS drill-press safety guidance was last revised November 27, 2024.
Milling has its own setup demands. CCOHS’s guidance for milling machines calls for securely mounting both the workpiece and cutter, and says cutting-speed decisions should account for the machine’s rigidity along with the material, cutter, finish, and depth of cut. An added table addresses only one part of setup; it cannot certify the machine for a milling operation. CCOHS milling-machine safety guidance was also last revised November 27, 2024.
Check the manual for the exact machine
Use the manufacturer’s manual as the authority for what a particular machine is designed and approved to do. Check whether it explicitly permits milling and specifies the required cutter holder, tool-retention method, and quill setup. Do not infer permission from an accessory fitting the table or spindle.

Machine-specific instructions can matter. For example, the manual for the Axminster-hosted Code 505109 mill-drill says not to use its quick-action chuck as a milling tool and instructs the operator to lock the quill before milling. Those instructions apply to that model, not to every drill press or mill-drill; consult the manual for your own machine. Code 505109 manual.
What to do if the manual does not authorize milling
- For drilling: Use a clamp or drill-press vise to secure the work, following the press manual. A vise can help prevent stock from rotating; it is not a milling-conversion kit.
- For milling: Use a milling machine whose manual covers the intended operation. Check its documented tooling and retention, workholding, travel, and operating limits for the material and cut you plan to make.
- If the manual is unclear: Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider about the exact model and operation. Do not treat silence as approval or rely on a generic retrofit recipe.
The available guidance does not establish a universal set of compatible conversion parts, feed rates, or safe cut depths for drill presses. Without the specific machine, cutter, material, and manufacturer instructions, a generic cutting recipe would be unreliable.

Keep safety guidance in its proper scope
For drill-press work, CCOHS advises reading the owner’s manual, using guards, securing the work, securing the cutting tool in the chuck, removing the chuck key before startup, keeping hands away from rotating parts, and switching off power before changing the bit. It also warns against loose clothing, jewelry, gloves, and leaving a running machine unattended. These are drill-press safety instructions, not endorsement of milling on a drill press. See the full drill-press guidance.
For milling-machine operation, CCOHS advises securely mounting the work and cutter, checking guards and setup before starting, keeping hands and loose clothing away from the cutter, and staying at the machine while it runs. Follow the manual for the particular mill and its approved tooling and limits. See the full milling-machine guidance.

- Product data: Maximum clamping: 4.84 inch/123 mm, jaw width: 4.92 inch/125 mm, jaw height: 1.18 inch/30 mm, jaw thickness: 0.24 inch/6 mm, width of mounting slot: 0.47 inch/12 mm, base length and width: 140 x 260 mm.
- Material: The cross slide drill press vise is made of cast iron material, which has strong toughness, high accuracy, durability, and long service life to meet your usage needs.
- Bidirectional movement: The 5 inch drill press X-Y compound vise can be moved back and forth, left and right through two handles, with clear and precise adjustment of the rotating handle scale.
- Clamping with jaws: The jaws of the cross slide vise are not easily broken, the jaws have high friction, strong clamping force, and the workpiece is not easy to shake.
- Scope of application: The drill press milling vise is suitable for CNC milling machines, drilling machines, grinding machines and other mechanical equipment, and can be used for workpiece clamping, facilitating processing.
A specialized exception is not a general conversion method
Cameron describes its Model 904 as a micro drill press that mounts to a milling-machine spindle using an adapter. That is a specialized configuration used with an existing milling machine; it does not show that an ordinary standalone drill press becomes a mill when fitted with a bolt-on table. Cameron Model 904.
